Character Background

When the last and eldest Nokotoli scholar passed away, the cult found itself in a disastrous situation. Having members who knew the language of their only relic - an ancient grimoire - was vital for a number of their bizzare and bloody rituals. As desperation grew, the leader decided to start looking for a new scholar "on the outside".

The search bore fruit almost immediately as the cult managed to abduct a person qualified to read the ancient language of the book, going by the name of Mortain. Coerced into joining the Nokotoli, he very quickly became one of the most prominent members of the cult. Eventually his zeal and passion were rewarded with the right to be the grimoire's keeper.

The more time Mortain spent reading into the book and ruminating on its contents, the more his consciousness sunk in the profane and twisted teachings of the grimoire. In the end, it has become apparent to him that the Nokotoli leader is merely a phony, barely scraping the surface and running a petty personality cult, decorated with snippets of a culture he doesn't understand. His justice was swift: the entire cult was wiped, leaving Mortain one on one with the newfound wisdom and the whole world of infidels.

Playstyle

Strengths
  • Strong anti-carry capabilities - MS and AS slow on Atonement is annoying to deal with and has 75% uptime provided it doesn't get dispelled while Memento Mori allows him to get in the face of some carries and threaten them with massive burst damage if they fight back.
  • Good laning if paired with a partner. While he doesn't provide any immediate kill potential until he has levels, Atonement is a good laning spell and Sacred Soil makes for an excellent area denial tool.
  • High utility with Sacred Soil and Ultimatum - nobody want to fight under effect of Soil and Ultimatum makes cores much harder to put down.
  • Fairly item-independent - Mortain needs mobility to make the most out of his abilities, but other than that he can just focus on utility and survivability as means to further boost his team. He doesn't mind dying either, as long as he got Soil and Ultimatum off.

Weaknesses
  • Level dependency - Mortain has subpar starting stats and his abilities are generally not very good at level 1, having high cooldowns and mediocre effect. Putting him as a solo laner isn't a good option either because he's generally a waste of a core(as in pos1/2) slot and is very susceptible to being zoned out or killed as a solo offlaner until he gets some levels.
  • Depends on mobility to land his spells effectively - Atonement has a fairly short range, while Memento Mori is melee, and Sacred Soil is centered around him, so he has to be in the middle of a fight to use it to its full potential. At the same time being in the middle of a fight significally lowers his chances of getting a good Ultimatum off.
  • Reaches his peak power when close to death, forcing the player to make high risk plays.
  • Low aggression potential - level 6 offers no significant peak in power and Mortain brings very little to the table when it comes to pickoffs - he is more of a support-y turn the tables hero with no real power outside of teamfigts.
