Introduction

Welcome to the first guide I have written on Dotafire.
Death Prophet is a hero that while is quite easy to play, is pretty difficult to master. She has a great nuke that deals AoE damage, an AoE silence, and one of the most versatile ultimates of the game.
Death Prophet is a hero that is very useful in the early and mid games, but does not fare well in end game. If you manage to have a good laning phase, and got loads of money to get the good stuff, the game is yours to dominate.Games that last more than 40-50 minutes can see a decline in the effectiveness of Death Prophet.
This guide is on how to play Death Prophet effectively .

Pros / Cons

Pros :
1)Easy to farm using crypt swarm.
2)Speed Speed Speed
3)One of the few heroes who can destroy a tower before it kills you before the creeps arrive.(Try this with viper sometime)
4)Gives your opponents the 'OMG DP is back already, I just killed him' feel in late game
5)Good Harrasing in early game
6)An amazing tank
7)cool background story(Man she's really immortal)


Cons :
1)Has an absurdly useless auto attack
2)Has slow animation time everywhere
3)Squishy early game
4)Farm Dependant
5)Can't gank alone in early game(No stun or slow)

Skills

Death Prophet has the following skills :

1) Crypt Swarm : This is your spammable nuke. It deals damage in a cone, thus it has a wider spread as the distance from Death Prophet increases. This skill is the skill that enables you to get last hits in early game as Death Prophet's auto-attack is pretty weak and slow, thus making it very tough to last hit.

2) Silence : This is a very underestimated ability of Death Prophet. Used properly, it can silence all opponent heroes silenced for 4 seconds in a team fight, thus rendering spell dependent heroes like Lina completely useless. this also prevents heroes like Anti-Mage}} and [[Queen of Pain from teleporting away if they are low on health.

3) Witchcraft : This is Death Prophet's passive. This is one of the most amazing passives in the game. This boosts the usefulness of all of Death Prophet's abilities, by reducing the mana cost and the cast time. It also increases the number of ghosts used during exorcism. But it's greatest benefit is it's ability to increase Death Prophet's speed. Death Prophet is a slow hero, but witchcraft turns that around to make her a really fast hero. This speed is the only way to escape troublesome situations, and is usually enough.

4) Exorcism : This is the spell that distinguishes a good DP from a bad one. This is one of the "Turn the tide of the whole fight" skill.Knowing when to use exorcism is the most important things about playing Death Prophet. This enables her to push, farm,jungle,gank or anything you want to. This spell is devastating is a group fight, and coupled with a good stun, this makes for free kills. It deals physical damage,so beware of heroes with high armour. Heroes with low armour generally have great spells, so a BKB + Exorcism makes for easy kills on such heroes.

Early Game

Death Prophet is slow and squishy early game. If possible, try to play as a mid lane hero, but if there are heroes like Viper or Drow Ranger in your team, Death Prophet can play as a side lane hero as well. If you are confident you can survive, skip on the Healing Salve as a starter item and save the money instead. If your team support is a complete incompetent support, and does not buy courier or wards, or you have heroes like Bounty Hunter who can become invisible, buy wards.
Your auto attack is very slow, thus making it very tough to last hit, or harass opponents using this only. But, your Crypt Swarm solves these problems for you. The reason we took a point in witchcraft before crypt swarm is because at level 1, Crypt swarm takes a lot of mana, for a low amount of damage.
Hit ranged creeps and time your Crypt Swarm to last both the ranged creep and another melee creep. If this hits the opponent hero, this is a good harass.
Your goal is to get to level 6 before it hits the 6 minute timer.
Then, you can use your Exorcism to either kill the opponent or to destroy the 1st tier tower in your lane. This is best done before the 10 minute timer.
If you are playing mid, rush a bottle to help you dominate the runes. By level 10, you should have atleast Arcane Boots so that you never run out of mana when Exorcism is off cooldown.

Mid Game

This is where Death Prophet excels. She is one amazing pusher when you hit level 11 and you should start carrying atleast 1 Town Portal with you at all times. So, whenever there is a team fight, you should sweep in and destroy all enemies with low armour using exorcism. As you are faster than most heroes, you should be able to catch fleeing heroes easily with Crypt Swarm. When you are not in team fight, use your crypt swarm to push lanes, and then your exorcism to demolish the enemy towers on all lanes.
Note that while Death Prophet has lots of life and has an amazing ultimate,she has a highly damaging attack Crypt Swarm once every 4 seconds. If you are facing heroes like Life Stealer or Anti-Mage when Exorcism is on cooldown,its best to silence and run. High Speed + BoT/Active of Phase Boots will enable you escape them easily. In case of lots of stuns in your opponent team, it's best to get a BKB.

Late Game

If you let the game in this phase, the effectiveness of Death Prophet decreases due to high HP and armour of opponents causing Exorcism to reduce in effectiveness and making DP a very powerful Pusher and less of a ganker. Its best to finish the game in the first 40-50 minutes only. It is best to get a Heart of Tarrasque and/or a Shiva's Guard to get insane amount of HP and stay a viable hero late game.
The Boots of Speed is an item that is a great starting item on all heroes, but together with Witchcraft, give you speed needed to escape early ganks, cause all you have to do is reach your tower.

Items

Starting Items :
Tango and a Healing Salve help you stay in lane when you are harassed by enemies. Skip the Salve if you are confident in your ability to stay alive, but get it ASAP if your opponent in your lane is someone like viper or drow ranger.
Clarity allows you to repeatedly use Crypt Swarm in the pre-Arcane Boot phase.
Ensure that you have atleast 200 mana at level 6 to cast your exorcism.
The Mantle of Intelligence and Iron Branch are used for some last hitting power.

Early Game :
A Bottle is to be bought only if you are going to mid and want to dominate the runes. It gives you lots of Regen and you can skip 1 clarity and a Salve in your starting items if you are planning on getting this.
Get a Ghost Specter only if you are repeatedly getting ganked, and are getting constantly stunned. It's +7 all attributes is a nice addition.
A null talisman gives you some needed extra stats.

Core :
A Bloodstone is a necessary for DP. It gives you nearly infinite mana, and when you get it, Crypt Swarm becomes spammable. As lots of enemies die around DP when exorcism is active, it accumulates charges quickly. It's suicide is a last option in an unavoidable death, and it takes a good player to use this correctly.

Get Phase Boots only if you are not dominating the game. If you are getting lots of cash fast enough, get BoT instead. This gives you lots of speed, But BoT is the best there is.

Luxury :
Boots of Travel : Death Prophet has only one escape method : speed.
Boots of Travel : more more more speed. Thus, you have cash, get it. This will allow you to have a global presence, and coupled with bloodstone, its as if you never died at all.

A BKB is absolutely necessary if your opponent stuns you when you are trying to escape or are trying to chase them. Speed is useless if you cant move at all.

Shiva's Guard is useful mostly pre-BoT as it gives you a slow, not really needed when you are one of the fastest heroes on the battleground. But it gives you armour and intelligence, which is useful on DP.

A Heart of Tarrasque is nothing but added HP and Regen, and lots of it. This enables you to survive late game and along with your speed, it makes you all buy invincible.

Gem of True Sight is needed just when you have trouble with heroes that are invisible, but not needed late game when you can destroy them before the get away.

Eul's Scepter of Divinity is an alternative to bloodstone when you are not making as much money as needed, or if there is a better Bloodstone carrier than you.
