I think most of us can agree there is something of an issue around new people finding the "best" or "relevant" guides, as many of them are hidden away, old (not necessarily out-dated) or in out of the way places.

However, I think we need to be careful with the "guide police" concept. One of the joys of DOTAFIRE is that anyone can add a guide, and people without previous "rep" (e.g. TheGoo) can come along and provide excellent advice without necessarily having lots of history.

Even the "weaker" guides still require somebody to make the effort to write them, and they shouldn't be put off by "TOTAL NOOB GUIDE!" comments straight away. Yes, they maybe get downvotes or advice on how to make them better, but most of us aren't born with the ability to write great stuff straight away.

E.g. some of my early guides were misguided or weak in places...but I got enough positive feedback to keep going and improve over time. Hopefully they were worth the wait.

TLDR - yes, we maybe could do with some sections or posts on "Approved" guides that could be updated over time, but I think we need to be careful not to put off prospective writers by being too harsh or deleting their guides.

My suggestion would be a special sticky (even a menu option, like Dr D's) of a guide/post that can be edited by multiple different "experienced" users only and links to "the best guides" currently available on the site.

There was just a discussion on Smitefire about a similar thing, lemme list things that popped up in the discussion:

  • Who are these "good players", why are they good and how many of them we have?
  • DotA 2 leaves a lot of room for subjectivity. These people are imperfect and subjective
  • -Fire sites are for every guide. Not only for those which deserve the top 1 spot.
  • If council police 1 says X is better than Y and the council police 2 says Y is better than X, which one is right?
  • Are there any really active members who have high knowledge and are as objective as possible?
  • What is a "good guide"?
  • Mowen's quote:

    Mowen wrote:

I pretty much agree with TT. If you set up barriers and require approval for guides, sure, quality might go up, but you are sacrificing a lot. There are problems with each system, which is why imo it is nice that both SMITEFire and Tiermonster exist.

Our sites have always believed in an environment where you are free to express your thoughts and strategies, that is what makes them unique and that is why people like the communities.

I am really hopeful that the S2 guide contest will help with the out of dates guide issue, and bring in more votes to help sort out guides. I will continue to do what I can to encourage voting and guide writing / updating, since I think that is the key to improving the guide quality on SMITEFire.

I really appreciate you bringing up your thoughts though, and if you have any other ideas I will happily read them. :)

  • Having this "police" would imply that these people have better and more proper opinion than other people. Also, it would imply that their opinion = Dotafire's opinion

Of course, this isn't to be implemented right the away I said, is to setup discussion.
Like, I can point here some guides that well, needs changes:

This one is a classic - link - the guy made the guide and created at least six accounts to upvote it. He even commented with two accounts, so we could see that it was only one people. Later, the guide got heavy downvoted, so it's fine.

This here is very old, yet it already shows a very common situation - [http://www.dotafire.com/dota-2/guide/sniping-is-a-good-job-3168]link[/url] - people that create an account just to publish a guide, they do it and then disappear. We have other Sniper (and other heroes, as well) guides in a similar fashion.

We have other things to look as well, like pub trench guides that gets upvoted ( Sniper for example, most of the top guides suggest Shadow Blade, Abyssal Blade and other bad things). And these guides get upvoted because people that's just starting use it and it works - because they are still on trench tier and everything can work there.

Things like that that we have to discuss. The way I suggested it's controversial, feels like censorship, but I believe we need to improve how guides can be made here in DOTAFire.

Well a comment or two may show signs that the guide is bad, right?

And people usually come to the comments section too.

Yet still, that Lion guide has 55 votes and 80% is upvotes. So it shows on top of its guide list.
We need people to vote too, downvote if it's needed.

Ummm...how is refresher Lion bad?

Double Hex? Double Ravage (oh I mean Earth Spike)? Double Finger of Death? Double Blink Dagger? Double Scythe of Vyse?

So legit actually. Even by only chaining his Q and W that's 13 seconds of single target stun. 13 ****ing seconds! Now add in a sheepstick and that's 20 seconds of chainstun.

Actually I think the guide police should be getting YOU. Kappa.

If it works perfectly fine for them, isn't it doing its job? If the guides were all top tier then we'd need just one guide (actually I am suggesting something interesting and new from Mobafire on editor forums spoon™) because all the guides are the same or at least too similar.

So this is a core Lion here? Because if he has a Refresher Orb and Scythe of Vyse (and a Blink Dagger), and is expecting to get it all off twice, then i assume he also has at least a Arcane Boots and something else to increase his mana pool ( Shiva's Guard or Rod of Atos).

(I did math at level 25 with blink, scythe, mana boots, refresher, Shiva's and a TP (you have to) he can cast everything, use mana boots, refresh, use everything and he will have 12 mana left. I'm also asuming it is too hectic to stand still and use Mana Drain...)

If this is true then i still have problems with this guide. This farm on a proper core hero would be more beneficial.
