Athena

Goddess of Wisdom

Where her brother represented the cruelty and savagery of war, Athena represented the discipline and strategy necessary to end them. Where his flag was disrespected, hers was viewed as inspirational. As peerless in combat as her kin, her greatest asset was always her wisdom such that even her father was fearful of. Despite this, Zeus ultimately caved in and admitted to requiring her assistance. Mars swore to crush his former family, and only Athena could match him. While she readily accepted this task, she began to internally debate his crusade. "Is there something here to consider? Is this outdated pantheon worth preserving, or is paving the way for a brighter future the wiser option?" Perhaps the answers would come as their spears and shields clash on the field of battle.

Description

Athena is a useful melee Intelligence hero for bolstering a team, though only through smart planning and foresight due to the delayed nature of her spells. So, most fights will fall in her favor with the right Judgement. With a Coordinated Assault, her allies can dispatch one enemy at a time with enough teamwork between themselves. To aid them in this endeavor or to circumvent danger, she may imbue allied heroes with Valor. While the mobility and invulnerability are helpful in general, timing can be crucial. Whether she is leading her allies into the fray or commanding them from afar, the Goddess of Wisdom is always one Decisive Moment away from victory.

Discussion

  • Athena is a mix of Dark Seer and Dazzle, a hero who relies on her team for damage and can keep them alive to keep the cycle going. Her basic abilities are up fairly often and are not that expensive to cast given their potential to be very powerful. This is even better considering her kit is quite varied as it provides damage, durability, mobility and disabling. Their main drawback is the 1 second delay that, unlike most other abilities, enemies can fully see. This provides opportunity for them to dodge and play around her abilities. That is why her ultimate seems underwhelming at first but can be the difference between life and death. Alleviating the main weakness of her abilities using Decisive Moment allows her to immediately stun enemies or save the life of allies. It is for this reason that empowering W and E are the best bets. Empowering Q is still decent in outputting a critical strike that is empowered by the bonus damage and that they have no time to react to, but it does pale in comparison to her other abilities. Thus, it has an additional effect that guarantees even more damage while prioritizing safety to still make it a valid option. Even if it is relatively strong, the bonus is meaningful because without the 1 second delay, Athena can't run near the target if cast from range.

  • For those who do not understand Coordinated Assault, simply imagine all chosen allies performing Gyrocopter's Side Gunner on the target. It does not interfere with their current actions, cancel their channeling spells and works while they are disabled. This spell is her primary source of damage and its output can fluctuate greatly depending on how many of her allies surround it. From decent damage in a creep wave, to massive damage with all 5 heroes to no damage if there are none near the target. So it requires good coordination to make the most of each cast, as the name implies. Melee heroes, including Athena, benefit from this the most since it allows them to strike from higher range. The self critical strike ensures that even while alone, she can at least somewhat duel enemies. An important thing to remember that was highlighted earlier is the difference between the range and radius. It has decent cast range for a nuke but the search radius is shorter than it, so she has to stay near regardless if she wants to add more damage.

  • Valor is a powerful single target buff. It does not just delay damage like False Promise, does not have a limit like Aphotic Shield and does not prevent them from acting like Cold Embrace. It completely negates damage like Spiked Carapace, but from all instances instead of just the first. And like that ability, it is great to counter delayed damage like Assassinate and damage over time like Venomous Gale. The speed buff really is just the icing on the top, but is still useful for letting them chase or escape. Enemies can choose to all focus the ally during the mark or ignore it completely during the buff. While the target cannot take damage which is helpful for preventing on-damage effects, they can still be stopped by crowd control so it is not omnipotent. Remember that though the uptime is good, the duration is short enough such that most disables last longer than the buff.

  • In larger scale fights, a well placed Judgement can be amazing. An AoE stun of above average duration with the size of Chronosphere? Yes please. The downside is the obvious marker like Blood Rite, so it is a great followup to more reliable disables in a way similar to Light Strike Array. Empowering it with the ultimate does make it a great initiation tool by itself, but then there is the heal to consider. If Athena uses this spell to start a fight, the recovery is usually wasted since most heroes begin the fight with full health. Like Death Pulse, making the most of each cast can be awkward since it affects both teams. It is also her only disable so focusing on just the heal can deplete her contribution. Thus, this ability is best cast in the middle of the battle to turn the tides with a burst of health and enough time to finish off the enemy.

  • In terms of playstyle and talents, she can be a great support who continually buffs her carries to crush the opposition as she sees fit or use those spells on herself to engage them directly with frightening efficiency. The combination of damage with attacks, survival through well-timed heals and invulnerability as well as chasing power using speed and stuns make her a brutal fighter. As a support, she is quite item independent since Coordinated Assault scales well with allied damage. As a core, she can improve her own damage output through items like Desolator and Aghanim's Scepter. Both builds benefit well from offensive aura items like Vladmir's Offering and Assault Cuirass. Defensive purchases like Medallion of Courage and Glimmer Cape won't be as needed because of Valor. And because of Judgement, Soul Ring becomes an interesting option while Mekansm won't be as needed. Athena definitely needs planning, foresight and teamwork to get the job done but when all the pieces fall into place, she can definitely lead her allies to greatness.

Broodmother : Weave no more, Arachnia.

Mars : We could have talked this out. But if war is what you want, then war is what you get.

Medusa : I take no pity on you, Gorgon. None at all.

Skywrath Mage : You lack not in wisdom, but in decisiveness.

Zeus : That head of yours looks as inflated as ever.
