I know some people will immediately discard this question, because I am fairly certain you would almost never buy Arcanes on CM. But I have recently been trying new build and experimenting a bit, and I have actually been skilling my ultimate at level 6, because it's just so damn useful early on, and does a hell of a lot of damage. But the obvious problem is that she literally cannot use Crystal Nova, Frostbite and Freezing Field consecutively, as it costs too much mana (this of course is presuming you maxed one or the other instead of maxing aura) but surely mana boots will solve this problem! First off, you buy mana boots on every hero who has problems sustaining mana and using all spells frequently, so of course, CM has a built in mana battery, that is doubled on her, but it's mainly the size of her pool that is the problem, (it doesn't matter how much mana regen you have if you don't have enough mana to use said mana regen on right?) pretty much at levels 6/11/16 you will have troubles sustaining your ultimate and other skills, assuming you have generic hard support items, like blink dagger, wand and maybe a couple of other cost efficient items, you will have a pretty small pool. Mana boots solve this problem by upgrading you pool by (is it 250?) which is plenty enough to sustain you throughout the game, furthermore, it gives you a burst mana restore, which is great for you and any allies, and it also means that you can still regain mana for you and your team quickly without having to skill too many points into arcane aura.

Any thoughts? I mean, it gives you some burst mana restoration for you and allies and boosts your fairly small mana pool!

Crystal Maiden with Arcane Boots is a huge mana battery to your team.

I am not playing this hero that much, but I also was wondering about this, and I think I might have got Arcane Boots on her once, just to be able to use Freezing Field. It was against a team with poor lockdown, so I realised that casting my ultimate in teamfights will be very helpful and (what is more importanant) effecitve. Considering her ultimate usage, her mana pool is very limited.

When we are at theorycrafting, I think you could make Arcane Boots, then other supportive items, and in the very late game, you could disassemble your Arcane Boots, turn it into Bloodstone and Boots of Speed turn into Boots of Travel.
I never tried it, though, so I wouldn't recommend that, but we can at least talk about it, huh?

I realllly like having Freezing Field at 6, I think it turns her into a much more dangerous hero. Compared to the value you get by putting that skill point into her other 3 spells, I think her ult is the far better choice. Her Mana Pool is the problem though, so I don't see Arcane Boots as a problem, since they fix a major issue. To modify Kyfoid's philosophy a bit, perhaps Arcanes+tranquils are the new meta for CM :D
I got to Notable, Thanks!

The problem with Crystal Maiden is that she desperately needs movement speed, as positioning is so important to land a five man Crystal Nova or a Frostbite on a running enemy. Tranquil Boots are pretty much core on her, but before their rework I used to go Phase Boots a lot (and still do so if I get some early gold). I just can't play CM without having one of those, it's a lot more restrictive.

Seriously, just get an early Point Booster on her on top of your tranquils. This item solves all her problems, and builds into Aghs later.

Tranquil Boots -> Point Booster -> Blink Dagger -> BKB/Aghs/whatever

No need to get Energy Booster, Point Booster is infinitely more cost-efficient because it also gives a lot of HP.

You really need tranquils on her, not only for movement speed, but for armor as well. Otherwise you sit at 1 armor.

Would you really prefer some fancy ice shards that are easily canceled and cool down like for 10000000 years to some mobility(Tranq/Blink) with your str and 280 MS as a support?

I do arcanes every time i random her. Arcanes is legit in my book.

Though an objection can be made that cm usually builds euls so arcames can be skipped because euls gives 190 manapool as well as that precious 35 movespeed that she so desperately needs.
But for those ultra mana hungry heroes like storm spirit or for those heroes who need mana management early game, i will say what obama said: yes we can

However consider euls seperately.

Trolling advice: go double boots on her tranqs and arcanes. Or phase and arcanes.
The world will flame you but if you do that you will now that there is only a small line of difference between idiot and a genius.

I never get Arcane Boots on Crystal Maiden, it just feels like getting Arcane Boots on Keeper of the Light. Tranquil Boots gives everything Crystal Maiden needs, huge HP regens, armor, movement speed, except mana pool, so I will stack a few Bracer and spend her mana wisely. I never get Aghanim's Scepter on her so I will go for Ghost Scepter, Force Staff, Eul's Scepter of Divinity, or Drum of Endurance if no one else is getting it (which often happens in pub).

Most of the time I will get my ulti at level 6, it's so wrecking when everyone's stun are either on cooldown or not enough mana for another stun.

well...i usually tend to also opt for Tranquil Boots on her. First of - just as pepoo said - movespeed is so damn important on her, even if its just burst speed...after you get your nova /bite out, you have no need for it anymore anyway. Also her survivability is laughable, making the bonus regen and armor much more valueable.

...alsi if you think about it those 250 bonus mana arent that much of a deal, since 10 int (in form of the highly cost ineffective Staff of Wizardry for instance) adds 130 mana already.
