Okay, will do so when I next encounter them :)
Also what about Viper? Vanguard? Or what else?

No not Vanguard on Viper it's outdated. Buy a Mekansm instead of Vanguard.

This ^

It provides pretty much the same level of survivability as a Vanguard, but benefits your entire Team. Just make sure that no one else on the Team is building one, especially in low-skill Pubs where everyone expects you to build Shadow Blade + Damage Items.

After that, some good options are Black King Bar to avoid getting Disabled (except against abilities that ignore Magic Immunity, e.g. Fiend's Grip, Doom, etc.), Aghanim's Scepter so you can use your Ult more than once in a Teamfight, Manta Style for Illusionsm, Stats and Movement Speed, or even a Heart of Tarrasque for Tankiness.

Blink Dagger on Viper instead of Shadow Blade. Legit?

if you build Aghanim's Scepter there isnt really any reason to go for a initiation item like Blink Dagger or Shadow Blade since the cast-range of your ult is huge. as xyrus already said: Black King Bar, Aghanim's Scepter and Manta Style are the usual core choices for Viper. Personally i can also recommend Orchid Malevolence.

Even I recommend Orchid Malevolence. My core build is: Phase Boots, Mekansm, Orchid Malevolence, Aghanim's Scepter and Manta Style. Black King Bar situational against disables, silence and other stuff.

And while you will pick up Heart of Tarrasque, buying Daedalus will make your damage pure.

To add to this, you can do this effectively in an off-lane position, considering it's far less farm than your 1 & 2 slot heroes need, while still being very effective. Aghs on viper is gross, 7 sec CD and you're spitting deadly poison into 3-4 heroes a fight.
Step 1: Pick Bristleback
Step 2: type in all chat:"GL hf"
Step 3: solo offlane
Step 4: first blood triple kill solo vs trilane
Step 5: continue head butting keyboard
Step 6: don't care, Bristleback doesn't give a ****
Step 7: screenshot repeated: BB OP comments in all chat
Step 8: alternate games with Slark pick
