You pick slark to punish enemy squishies, to punish lask of AOE stuns/stuns without a projectile, and most importantly, to push after a major teamfight.
Essence Shift allows slark to push after stealing stats from everyone.
Slark needs a frontline, and he needs some sort of disable so he can keep hitting them. Slark hates AOE stuns and Fissure. Slark hates silences.
Essentially every lineup. Maybe you could theorycraft on his place in a CM draft but seriously, from a solo queue ranked player's perspective, he's a pretty self-reliant hero that doesn't need team synergy to work well, and it's one of the hero's big upsides.
Which heroes would Slark love and hate in an enemy lineup?
He's really good agaist lineups with low lockdown, or at least with disables that he can Dark Pact away. Against a team that can't lockdown Slark, the pick is almost autowin, a bit like Anti-Mage.
He's really good against projectile stuns, e.g Wraith King, Vengeful Spirit etc. He's also really good against predictable/delayed disables, Stone Gaze being probably the best example. He can time pact perfectly against that and avoid every stun.
He's pretty mediocre against instant disables. While theoretically he can pact off stuff like Hex or Primal Roar, in practice against any decent player that's just not happening. Blink-hex and similar is almost impossible to time pact against and essentially owns Slark.
Slark is best played against low mobility heroes, since he relies on Pounce and Eye of Skadi to chase people around, and has no way to lock down heroes with instant mobility. Anti-Mage, Storm Spirit, Ember Spirit, Earth Spirit etc can essentially kite Slark endlessly even after he gets his Abyssal Blade, and that's a sad, sad fish.
Slark is great against tanky heroes because Essence Shift.
