Centaur, these boots are made for stomping!

Introduction

Hello again fellow Dota players, it is I Dedish bringing you yet another guide to one of my all time favorite heroes...Centaur.

Cent was one of the very first heroes I learned to use in Dota 1 back in 2004 and is extremely fun to play and is a very well rounded hero. Sadly like most of the recommended builds in dota 2 the one for Centaur irks me to no end. Yes some of the items they list are good but others ... who makes these builds?

Anyway with out further adieu my guide to building a well rounded and tanky Centaur capable of getting kills easily.

Centaur Warrunner

It's said that a centaur's road is paved with the corpses of the fallen. For the one called Warrunner, it has been a long road indeed. To outsiders, the four-legged clans of Druud are often mistaken for simple, brutish creatures. Their language has no written form; their culture lacks pictographic traditions, structured music, formalized religion. For centaurs, combat is the perfect articulation of thought, the highest expression of self. If killing is an art among centaurs, then Bradwarden the Warrunner is their greatest artist. He rose to dominance on the proving grounds of Omexe, an ancient arena where centaur clans have for millennia gathered to perform their gladiatorial rights. As his fame spread, spectators came from far and wide to see the great centaur in action. Always the first to step into the arena, and the last to leave, he composes a masterpiece in each guttering spray, each thrust of blood-slickened blade-length. It is the poetry of blood on steel, flung in complex patterns across the pale sands of the killing floor.
Warrunner defeated warrior after warrior, until the arena boomed with the cheering of his name, and he found himself alone, the uncontested champion of his kind. The great belt of Omexe was bestowed, wrapped around his broad torso, but in his victory, the death-artist found only emptiness. For what is a warrior without a challenge? The great centaur galloped out of Omexe that day with a new goal. To his people, Warrunner is the greatest warrior to ever step into the arena. Now he has set out to prove he is the greatest fighter who has ever lived.

Pros / Cons

Skills

Q

CASTING METHOD: AREA OF EFFECT
TARGETTING METHOD: INSTANT CAST
ALLOWED TARGETS: ENEMY UNITS
Slams the ground, stunning and damaging nearby enemy land units.

Area of Effect - 315
Magic Damage - 100 / 150 / 200 / 250
Stun Duration - 2 / 2.25 / 2.5 / 2.75

Mana Cost: 85 / 100 / 115 / 130 Cooldown Time: 13

Tips: Centaurs signature move. Good for starting a fight or using to by a few extra seconds to make a hasty escape. Only real downside is it kind of has a bad animation.

W

CASTING METHOD: ACTIVE
TARGETTING METHOD: UNIT
ALLOWED TARGETS: ENEMY UNITS
The Centaur summons a tremendous amount of inner strength and releases a very powerful attack. It can only be done at melee range, and it damages both the Warchief and the enemy unit.

Casting Range - 150
Damage - 175 / 250 / 325 / 400
AoE - 190
Type - Magical

Cannot kill yourself with Double Edge.

Cooldown Time: 8

Tips: This ability is Centaurs nuke and it hit like a truck making it very easy for cent to score kills when timed properly.

E

CASTING METHOD: PASSIVE
ALLOWED TARGETS: ENEMY UNITS AND STRUCTURES
The Centaur Warchief immediately counters every attack against him with a swift strike.

Lv1: Returns 16 + 26% of Centaur's Strength as damage
Lv2: Returns 18 + 34% of Centaur's Strength as damage
Lv3: Returns 20 + 42% of Centaur's Strength as damage
Lv4: Returns 22 + 50% of Centaur's Strength as damage

Type - Physical
Causes damage when enemy begins an attack, not when their attack hits.

Tips: This is basically a free Balde Mail and really helps with farming. I normally take this at level 3 to help with gold farm, although if i am getting harassed a lot early game I'll grab it at 2 before Double Edge.

R

CASTING METHOD: GLOBAL ACTIVE
TARGETTING METHOD: INSTANT
ALLOWED TARGETS: FRIENDLY HEROES
Grants you and all allied player units on the map max movement speed and zero unit/world collision for a short duration. Any enemy units you or your allies come into collision with take some damage and is slowed. Enemies can only be affected by stampede impact once.

Duration: 3.75
Damage: 0 + 1 / 2 / 3x str
Slow: 100% - All Ranks
Stampede Collision AoE: 105

Mana Cost: 80 Cooldown Time: 120 / 90 / 60

Tips: Man I love the changes to his ult. Back in Dota 1 his ult gave him increased strength 12 24 36 at 6 11 and 16 (if I remember correctly) His new ult just owns so much face. It is good for both initiation or escape gives you max move speed, stuns everything you hit, and has a pretty low cooldown at rank 3. A lot of core builds back in the day would have a Blink Dagger in them for starting team fights but now with his newer ult a dagger is not really needed in my opinion and frees up 2150 gold for something else.

Items

Alright here is my item build and justification for them.

So before we get down to it I want to clear up why I don't have Blade Mail listed in my item build. Yes it stacks with Return, yes it gives you some damage, a little armor, and some int which helps with your low mana pool a bit. However Return is really good and does the exact same thing without a cooldown and is constantly active, and I just feel it is taking 2200 gold away from other items that will help you much more.

If you picked: Start with 1 Tango 2 Healing Salve and a
Stout Shield which you will later use to turn into your Vanguard

If you randomed: Same as above only add a Quelling Blade which will help you with last hitting. These items will give you good sustainability early and let you stay in lane longer to farm and get some levels.

Next just simply follow the item guide above, buying in this order.

Early game:
Boots of Speed Although if you find you are taking a lot of abuse early get your
Ring of Health first.

Ring of Health this will be used to make your vanguard.

Power Treads I feel these are the best boots for Centaur. They give you attack and move speed, and some stats. I feel that the usefulness of Tranquil Boots fades to early and just slows down your build.

Vanguard You sir are a tank and are going to be in the thick of things so build tanky. Hp regen, block and 250 health, everything a growing Centaur needs.

Core:
Now it is time to start building your Battle Fury I think this is a extremely good item for Centaur. It gives you 65 damage, 6 hp regen, 150% mana regen which will greatly help with your low mana pool, and cleave. It is awesome for farming and works well with your Return and will make farming the more expensive items a little faster. I normally build Battle Fury in this order Claymore Broadsword Void Stone Ring of Health

Heart of Tarrasque I can't stress how awesome this item is on Centaur. It just increases your overall tankiness and gives yet more strength and hp regen plus a lot more hp.

Late game:
Assault Cuirass Good item for Centaur gives you 10 armor and 35 attack speed plus giving your teammates some attack speed a well.

Skull Basher 40 damage 6 strength and a 25% chance (10% for ranged) to bash the target helping you to lock people down even more

Abyssal Blade 100 Damage 10 strength. The bash is exactly the same as the
Skull Basher only now you get the active Overwhelm which gives you yet another stun that last 2 seconds and goes through magic immunity.

Situational:
Black King Bar
Hood of Defiance

If you find you are facing a lot of stunners and or control or heavy nukers you might want to consider picking these items up.

For the Lulz:
Now if you are having a really good game and are scoring tons of kills and farming like a mad man and sitting on a *** ton of gold you might consider grabbing these for the giggles.

Heart of Tarrasque would be my first choice because you can never have to much health, strength or hp regen in my opinion.

Radiance 60 damage plus a additional 45 magical aoe damage. Simply put you will just melt creep waves and enemy heroes alike with this plus your Return and
Battle Fury

Divine Rapier LOL nuff said.....just don't die.

Summary

So that is pretty much it. Early game just try to last hit and farm. once you hit around level 3 or 4 don't be afraid to start messing with who ever you're laning against. Do not be afraid to Start team fights, you are Centaur and you are a BEAST!

Just do your best to farm and score some kills and get your core items. After that what you build is your choice and as always situational, I just tried to give you some ideals and wanted to share what works for me.

I will do my best to get some video of some gameplay to give you all a visual idea and will do my best to update this build as needed.

If you have questions feel free to ask.

See you all in game, enjoy and keep on Dota'n
