Zheng

The Shade

Zheng, the Shade, is a melee agility hero whose role revolves around dueling, assassinating and escaping under extreme pressure if properly managed. Ideally, he is played alongside a strong lane support in the safelane to ensure a profitable early game. Although his mid-game influence is far from disappointing, in order to unlock his maximum effectiveness so he can keep up with other carries who shine during this stage and outscale them later, he needs a combination of fast farm patterns and successful skirmish fights. Zheng’s true power lies within his capability to quickly slay enemy heroes despite their allies trying to help. His abilities synergize well with each other and the timing is all that matters. The risk of playing Zheng is as high as the reward, even though he should not be regarded as a situational pick. As long as he is not shut down early enough while he is vulnerable, he eventually scales into a terrific hard carry, overwhelming almost any foe thanks to his elusive nature and deadly skillset.

LORE

Long before the world was shaped, while there was still only chaos, the Shades were formed. Their lone sovereign ruled over endless darkness for aeons, known as the Dark Ages. But then, it was the Beginning that brought the mighty Titans. For the first time, contrast made its appearance on this wicked universe. The Titans had the world's prosperity as their sole purpose of existence as they gained the first energies by the Shaper, the god that showed them the way of creation. They wanted to innovate, to ensure balance. Their believes were considered menacing by the Shades who were sworn to eliminate them once and forever. Because they were strangely outnumbered by the newcomers, they created an army of lesser demons. Leading their servants into the fray, they forced the first battle to ever happen in which, unfortunately, their enemies emerged victorious despite thousand of casualties. Legends say that after this epic ancient battle, the Seven Planes were forged by the Worldsmiths and one served as an infernal prison for those who did not accept to pledge themselves neutral to their campaign: the infamous Foulfell. Foulfell was ruled by new Demon Lords who essentially betrayed their purpose. A former Shade general whose malice caused shiver even among the most fearless demons in the Seven Hells was finally released under the Fallen One's command because he thought the first could act as a worthy pawn in his evil plans. But the Shade refused and escaped from Foulfell after disappearing into the shadows. He would serve noone and nothing else, but his own motive of vengeance and redemption.

Primary Abilities

Phantom Ambush
Zheng becomes invisibile and stalks the targeted enemy unit, gaining increased and unobstructed movement speed if it is a hero and he faces its position. He can then blink from a certain distance to attack it and apply a stun. Although the invisibility cannot end unless Zheng attacks, the target dies or the duration ends, vision over the target is also needed for the rest bonuses of Phantom Ambush.

NOTES
Umbrageous Poison
Zheng surrounds himself with a poison that damages nearby enemies every second and slows their movement speed. The damage is doubled against illusions. Additionally, non-ancient creeps that are slain by Zheng while poisoned heal him for a percentage of their maximum health.

To survive hunger and deal with the maddening reflections inside the infamous prison he was kept in, Zheng created a self-beneficial poison made from his own essence.

NOTES
Tenacity
Zheng applies a strong dispel on himself and increases his attack speed. The ability's cooldown is reduced by 6 seconds whenever he deals an amount of damage to enemy heroes over a certain threshold in the last 3 second. The same damage instance can apply multiple reductions whenever it exceeds the threshold. Can be used while disabled.

Ultimate Abilities

Shadow's Embrace
For a short duration, Zheng summons an invulnerable duplicate of himself to attack the selected enemy hero with True Strike and provide True Sight over them exclusively. The copy inevitably remains sticked to the hero who is also muted and cannot be affected by allied heroes spells or items throughout the effect.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Scales well into late game.
  • Can duel pretty much anyone.
  • Escape potential.
  • Great disabler.

Cons

  • Fragile early game.
  • Weak against silences.
  • Item and level dependent.

Suggested Items

Early Game:
  • Quelling Blade makes last hits easier.
  • Stout Shield helps against early harass from physical attacks.
  • Ring of Aquila provides attributes, armor, damage, and mana regeneration for a bargain.
  • Power Treads are generally prefered over Phase Boots as they also boost his survivability and Zheng does not really need Phase. They can also be bought from the sidelane shop.

Mid Game:
  • Echo Sabre supplies Zheng with a variety of stats and the consecutive attacks of its passive allow him to stick to faster enemies and reset Tenacity's cooldown easier in the small cost of 2650 gold.
  • Sange and Yasha provides decent all-around stats and the build path is pretty easy. It can also be disassembled to build Manta Style later on.
  • Manta Style is a great defensive item for Zheng as he can manually get rid of silences, the only dispellable disable that can truly hurt him. The illusions will be really strong too, because his attribute gain stands among the highest.
  • Desolator offers a big load of raw damage to Zheng and improves his pushing potential since the armor reduction also works on buildings.
  • Orchid Malevolence's silence synergizes really well with Shadow Embrace's mute and it is needed against some heroes. The stats are nice too and he can start using his abilities more frequently.

Late Game:
  • Abyssal Blade's bash chance is welcomed by Zheng's high agility and the active stun paired with the low cooldown of Phantom Ambush enables him to lock down high priority targets and finish them off before they can react.
  • Eye of Skadi boosts his already high attributes even more and its debuff synergizes well with Umbrageous Poison.
  • Butterfly greatly improves Zheng, both offensively and defensively with the evasion being the most important addition for him.
  • Daedalus is definetely one of his favourite items, as his high attack damage promises that any critical strike can be proved fatal and instantly reset Tenacity's cooldown.
  • Bloodthorn can be a good alternative of Daedalus if Zheng has already bought an Orchid Malevolence.
  • Satanic enables Zheng to regain a lot of health in short time by attacking his enemies, improving his survivability. It is highly recommended at late game if the lifesteal talent at level 20 was not selected.

Situational Items:
  • Defensive options: In contrast to most carries, Black King Bar is usually skipped by Zheng, unless he is against heroes that heavily rely on their abilities which do not pierce spell immunity to fulfill their role (e.g. Outworld Devourer, Invoker, Skywrath Mage). Similarly, Linken's Sphere can help against some powerful single-target abilities (e.g. Duel, Sunder, Rupture).
  • Farming related options: The following items improve Zheng's farming rate so he can purchase his other items faster. Each of those three has its own advantages over the others. Battle Fury helps him deal better with illusion heroes and adds some regen. On the other hand, the hard-to-build Radiance can be effective on his strong Manta illusions later in the game. And last but not least, an early Hand of Midas can increase his GPM as much as 133.33. However, keep in mind that Zheng already possesses a farming tool: Umbrageous Poison.

MY THOUGHTS

Creating this hero concept was fun and I am satisfied with the result although there is a big room for improvement. Excuse me for not putting any images for the hero model and his abilities, but I currently haven't found a way to produce something great myself. Special shout-out to Dotafire for letting the community express new ideas about our favourite game. With this hero I enter the Spooky Hero Creation Contest and I wish good luck to every participant. Waiting for comments and suggestions!
