If a game goes really long as a support and you have farm Scythe of Vyse is the pick for sure.
Otherwise, utility items are your friend. Force staff, glimmer cape, euls, ghost scepter. All the stuff that can save you or your carry.

Hi TrumpetsGo!

Welcome to dotafire, we hope you enjoy your stay!

I'm not sure what you mean by "Basic Item" and "long game support build."

However, some good supports to pick are: Lich, Lion, and Crystal Maiden.

Here are some general support items you could buy (but keep in mind each hero has different items to go for):

Observer Wards. Just buy them.
Dust of Appearance: Reveals invisible heroes.
Smoke of Deceit: Gives your team invisibility to sneak past enemy wards - the invisibility ends after a duration or when you come close to an enemy hero.
Mekansm: An AOE heal.
Glimmer Cape: Gives an ally Magic Resistance and invisibility
Solar Crest: Gives an ally armour and evasion, or takes away an enemy's armour and gives them a miss chance.
Force Staff: Helps position yourself away from enemies - can also be used to save an ally's life.
Ghost Scepter: Grants yourself invulnerability to physical damage - to help survive when enemy carries are hunting you down.

These are only a small amount of items to buy - but enough for you to start off.

Cheers!

It really differs from hero to hero I think. There are a lot of items I would almost never buy on certain supports, like for Crystal Maiden I wouldn't buy Mekansm or Solar Crest usually, but I might do for other heroes like Vengeful Spirit for example.

There are some all around good items in general, usually utility items that are very cheap, like Force Staff, Glimmer Cape etc.

Often times Blink Dagger is useful for a lot of supports because it provides a huge boost to their mobility, although on some heroes I wouldn't buy it, and on some I would focus on buying it as soon as I can. It really does vary, but I would recommend experimenting with some different items to find out which you like most.

OK my friend.
You have already received good advice here.

But they haven't touched upon the heroes, so I will tell you what works.

Considering you have just started supporting, it is better that you get heroes that are good in laning. And that means securing farm for your carry while being durable themselves or having a mechanism to avoid death.

And the best I can recommend you in this regard is dazzle. In pubs, his shallow grave is wondrous. His heal is also a nuke meaning that if you use it when the enemy is near creeps, he gets damaged also. Your Q is a very good harass, and shallow grave and his ult never fall off. Even in late game. A team with your ult can have 25+ armor buffed in them and if you catch a prep enemy, means the guy takes amplified damage. That's something to be afraid of in late game. Shallow grave can always work for clutch saves.

The other support is an aggressive support and is the same hero that I started my support journey. Venomancer.
Take one point in venomous gale max your third skill and take ulti whenever you can. Point is he needs to be built like an int support. So go mekansm, veil of discord and then into glimmer caps for your team and even lotus orb / scythe of case late game.
Never be selfish
Your carry always gets priority on farm and exp. That means you try and harass any person away who contest farm.
You stack camps
You ward the heck out of map
And u use scan ability with consent of people.

Always keep using time of knowledge as you may find yourself under levelled considering you are new. Heck, if you support well you will have some problem with levels before 10 mins of the game. Just stay positive. Support means you need to be the cheerleader for your team. You are the lynchpin that tiea the team and it is a role of great responsibility with little recognition but a high self fulfilment of you play it well.

Good luck, tell us how it goes and we can help you more.

See you around!

Which hero you want to chose has to do with what you like but I can give some suggestions:

Abaddon: strong support who is almost unkillable with his ultimate and shield. He can heal allies with Mist Coil and block damage with Aphotic Shield. He also has a slow, which procs when he attacks Curse of Avernus. The curse also gives you and your allies more movementspeed and attackspeed.

Crystal Maiden, a hero who is really popular as a support. She has a aoe( area of effect) slow Crystal Nova which deals also damage, a stun Frostbite which also deals damage and a mana regen aura, Arcane Aura which regens your allies their aura but also your (twice as much it does for allies). Her ultimate Freezing Field does an amazing amount of damage in an aoe around her and also slows everyone in that same aoe.

Dazzle, just as Abaddon dazzle can heal. His first spell Poison Touch slows and does damage to an enemy. Than he has a spell that can prevent a hero from dieing Shallow Grave, it doesn't block damage so cast it when someone is almost going to die. His third Shadow Wave is a heal that heals more when you hit more people with it. It is a sort of wave. His ultimate weave lowers enemy their armor while increasing your team's.

Earthshaker, a strong melee support who can deal a lot of damage. His Fissure is a really strong stun which can block pathways. Enchant Totem let you do extra damage on your rightclick. Aftershock is a passive which stuns and deals damage in an aoe around you when casting a spell. Your ultimate is a big dunk which deals more damage when there are more heroes or creeps in the area.

Lich, one of the best beginners support. His first, Frost Blast is a nuke and slow. his second gives armor to allies. sacrifice make you kill a creep from your side, so the enemy can't get exp from it. You gain the exp from that creep and you get mana based on the hp of the creep. This way you can spam your Frost Blast. Lich his ultimate, Chain Frost is a big nuke and slow that bounces on the enemy.

Lion, also a really good support to start with. Earth Spike is a stun, which deals damage. It travels in a lane in front of you. Hex changes an enemy into a pig so he can't attack or cast spells and is slowed. Mana Drain drains mana so you can be full mana all the time. Finger of Death is just a big nuke which litterly says **** you to an enemy.

Omniknight, this hero has a lot common with Abaddon. Purification is a heal, Repel can be cast on an ally so he is invulnerable to magic damage and other spells. Degen Aura is an aoe slow around you. Guardian Angel make you and your allies immune to all physical damage for a short time.

Rubick, a support who is a lot of fun when the enemy has strong spells like Black Hole. WHy, because his ultimate Spell Steal make you steal the enemy their spells. Further Rubick has a stun telekenesis, a nuke Fade Bolt and an aura which increases magic resistance null field.

Shadow Shaman is a really strong pusher because of his ultimate mass serpent wards. Than he also has a big aoe nuke Ether Shock, a Hex, just like Lion, and a stun Shackles which also deals a lot of damage.

Vengeful Spirit is a support which is maybe not that good in solo games but when playing with a friend she is amazing. Magic Missile is a stun which deals damage. Wave of Terror lowers the enemy their armor, Vengeance Aura is an aura which increases yours and you allies their base damage. Nether Swap make you swap positions with another hero, which makes you a strong but suicidal initiator.

Last but not least we have Witch Doctor. The support is really popular for starters because he is easy but deals a lot of damage and has a good stun. Paralyzing Cask is a stun that bounces on the enemy. Voodoo Restoration is an aoe heal. maledictions is a strong heal whose damage increases if the enemy takes more damage, ideal to finish of a kill. Cast malediction early and than when he is escaping your malediction will finish him off. Last his has a really strong ultimate Death Ward what deals a **** ton of damage.
Any man can make mistakes, but only an idiot persists in it.

I have a question: I read above and also in a different thread that buying Mekansm as Crystal Maiden is not a thing one should do. What is the reason for that? Is it too expensive to get it at reasonable time? Or because other items are more useful on her? Any other reason?
Thanks in advance!

Hey Chuckie. Mekansm is not a good item for Crystal Maiden mainly because she actually doesn't have that much mana to work with, and if you get a Mek you won't be able to use your spells - so you're getting an item that makes your hero not be able to use its specific spells. If you really want a Mek on your team, you should go for another support that is suited for it (like Dazzle), or you should just let your offlaner/utility get one.

Besides this, Crystal Maiden needs other items that make her much more useful. She doesn't have timings, but you want your Mek hero to be able to be in the middle of the fight, sustain some damage and then pop it, and she's too squishy for that and should always be in the outskirts of teamfighs. If you want to help your teammates with sustain go Urn of Shadows instead like I do! (I've explained why in my guide).

Other CM items that you should want more than Mekansm depending on the game: Blink Dagger, Force Staff; Ghost Scepter; Black King Bar; Aghanim's Scepter...

ChiChi, thanks a lot for your explanation!

Crystal Maiden is my most played hero and the one I'm most successful with; she is certainly my favourite hero.
In the ca. 90 games I played with her I often and regularly bought a Mekansm when I was able to get it reasonably early.

On the other hand, I have not once in these 90 games bought something like a Blink Dagger or Black King Bar as I hardly ever could afford that. So there is probably a correlation between these as the Mekansm just left me with too few gold for anything else as I'm always playing the excessive ward ***** with obs, sentries, dust etc.

Even an Aghanim's Scepter I only could afford every 10th or 12th game.
So I will now try to avoid the Mekansm and see how I fare.

Over the last few weeks I followed you advice and made a point in getting a Urn of Shadows, and I had really good success with it and it also really felt like something useful to have.

So thanks again!

ChuckieFR
