Excess of something good is bad.
When you get tired of DoTA you take a break
When you get tired of Forums, you take a break.

Some recent exchanges have gone the undesirable way. Makes me realize that there is a mix of people bias and some communication fiascos on my side as well. So while I work on that, I wish to Thank each and every one at dota fire for extending their site to me; once again.. For some inexplicable reason, whenever I come here it always felt like being in the presence of family. I never understood why.

I hoped as I started writing my first posts with this account that I do not offend Hades.
I hoped as I came to be a regular poster here, that people might change a bit of their perceptions about me. I think I partially achieved it, as porygon and smuggles could attest to it with their signatures.
I hoped that I gain some good friends here and make this good site my permanent place of Serious residence, contributing to good sirs' and madams' thoughts.
I hoped to rede…

CHAPTER I : INTRODUCTION

Hello everyone! By now you probably all know me, but just in case this makes it ouside the boundaries of this community, my name is Wulfstan, and I'm proud to call myself a member of the DotaFIRE community.

Why am I writing this? I see so many people feeling discouraged when they first play this game, so I'd like to share some insight on my point of view on this. Starting out is really hard for everyone. DoTA/DOTA 2 has a really high learning curve. You can't even think how hard it was for me to learn on how to play this game at a decent level. There's still so many things to learn, because Valve/Icefrog kind of keep the game fresh with all the balance patches and the new heroes added to the game.

CHAPTER II : DOTA'S BEGGININGS

So, without further due, let's go on with it. Back in the old days, we had no DOTA 2. DoTA was not a standalone game. It was a mod/map in WC3(Warcraft III). It is based off of Aeon of Strife, an old SC (Starcraft) map that revolv…

Just FYI, this blog is gonna jump around all areas of Dota probably, I'll try to post relatively frequently.

I can't remember the last time I bought a Daedalus.

I've played all the common carriers, Drow Ranger, Medusa, Troll, a few others--but I never feel that I want to invest in the item. But why?

Well, The famous crit stick offers one thing: An attack damage increase through base attack damage and critical hits. It does this really well and you can melt people with it, but what if.

what if the enemy core suddenly grabs evasion and I need MKB, what if the enemy gets a few damage items and I suddenly need to be tankier or get evasion, what if the enemy gets BKBs and I need an Abyssal or Skadi to keep them off of me?

I end up never getting a Daedalus because it only gives me one dimension of usefulness. Eye of Skadi gives me stats, damage, and a slow-- Skull Basher gives me damage and a disable--MKB gives me true strike-- Butterfly gives me damage, attack speed, and evasion. …

Over the last few weeks I've been a bit mystified. My winrate had dropped a bit, and I couldn't figure out why I was dropping games, I kept feeling like I had little control over the outcome of a match.

However, this evening I had a bit of a revelation.

The current patch and meta has ever so sneakily shifted me away from all the heroes I am great at and has left me with the ones I'm only average with. When I look at a hero pool now I don't see my early/mid game favorites of Lifestealer, Drow Ranger, Dragon Knight, and Huskar. No, I immediately go towards Troll Warlord(sorry), [[Juggernaut]}(really sorry), or some other late-blooming carry.

Now it's not bad for my group of preferred heroes to change, I just can't expect to get the same results trying out a new build on Troll to the results I get with my Drow or DK of a few patches ago.

I suppose the point of this is to encourage others that may be having the same experience. Don't just blindly remember that Jugg is good, figure…

So, new blog series. Not story-related, thank God.

I've recently gotten back into Warcraft III, what's not to love! As in the past, I've gravitated towards the World Editor for making my own maps. This is where Dota started, and while I am certainly not following in Icefrog's footsteps there's no reason I can't make an RPG!

Hence the blog.

My latest project, started only yesterday, is a single-player RPG called 'Rising Tides'. It follows in the footsteps of the half-elven Augur Rogue Anya Sundancer. (Augur Rogue is a Hero class that basically combines elements of the rogue and the mage - think TA cross OD. No spoilers on the story yet, as I have only a vague idea of where it's heading, but this is going to be a long campaign over multiple maps, where we follow the lovely Anya's battles with various evil forces and dark conspiracies.

Already this thing has raised numerous challenges. The trigger editor is making my head literally hurt. The terraining is taking forever due to the det…

Once upon a time...

there was a bloke called .... smuggels

and he was introduced to a fantastic game called "Defence of the ancients 2" by a friend of his. Now he used to play DotA1 a lot back in his more juvenile days so he though HEY i remember this game and was ready for fun times to be had. (*CARRY LESHRAC FTW*)

now after many many hours and a lot of games it was safe to say he had no idea how to play but he persevered and was addicted in no time.

then with a new update big shiny letters RANKED gameplay was introduced being level 16 or so and having a couple of hundred games under his belt ole smuggels thought he was the **** and went i could totally do this.

sadly he was not the **** NOR was he in particular any good. thus he got a 1.1 or 1.4 something MMR ... *fuzzy on actual number*

thinking this was the best thing ever he was quickly disabused from the notion by reddit and fellow dota players.

thus he didnt touch the RANKED section for some time BUT it was always there i…

Hotkeys

Hello guys, it's me again, .Elusive. Earlier this week I wrote a blog post about one of my favorite dota 2 mechanics: quick cast. You should go check it out. But today, I realized I have skipped over one of THE MOST important mechanics of dota 2... Hotkeys.

Alright, so a little bit of background about myself. My first real online game was Starcraft II (I played Terran, Duh), a real-time-strategy game. In Starcraft, the commander's win rate is determined by if they can perform more actions in a limited amount of time while at the same time considering their opponents every move. For instance, in 5 seconds you should be queuing up SCVs, queuing up some marines, being aware of the map, controlling your army, and be thinking about what the opponent is probably doing AT THE SAME TIME. This is why it's vital to use hotkeys, and that is a lesson I learned well.

So then, I delved into dota 2, my first MOBA. Since I'd already learned what hotkeys were, I automatically transferred them over, a…

So, hello again, .Elusive here. Today I'm going to be taking about an unranked pub I played today with a good mate of mine, and what went wrong. This is by no means a high tier game, but I will try analyzing it and showing my/others mistakes.

First off, they immediately banned Doom, which (we thought) signified lots of big ults. Our captain banned Pudge as a personal ban, then banned Sniper after they banned Phantom Assassin. He then picked Lich on my mates request, then they grabbed Witch Doctor. I realized they were probably going for big team fight spells to set up for a tunnel vision carry such as Sven or Troll Warlord. They picked troll second before we could ban, and so our captain banned some solid supports. We then grabbed Meepo? I think the captain thought he could counter troll.... Then they picked Lina and Enigma and he decided to pick Windranger for mid. On behalf of the Shadow Shaman player, the captain banned Storm Spirit because he was "broken". We picked …
