DOTA 2 isn't DOTA on WC3. It doesn't make you cool, vintage or "pro". So why is it that every single player I've met that used to play DOTA on Warcraft does this? And when someone, like me, doesn't know the old names it makes them/us a noob?

It's ridiculous. Please clarify :o

lol. I know exactly what you mean. Either People just do it so they can then call you noob, or its because they forgot that the hero has a new name. I never played dota 1 but I was around when they started changing heroes names. I call Io Wisp still, and Doom Doom bringer. So most likely these people just forget that the heroes were renamed.

It's because we're used to calling these heroes these names for a long time. For example, it took me awhile to stop calling Nature's Prophet orignal name Furion.

If you don't know the orignal names, people can assume you just started playing recently.

They're right to assume so, but that doesn't warrant flaming. :s I just don't understand the need to flash their "supreme skills and knowledge". Erh.

It's nothing to rage over if you don't know the old names, but it does show that you are somewhat new to Dota. And as for people that call them by their old names, it's just that the name feels natural. It's like if your best friend changed his name, you'd probably still call him by his old name, not his legal name, for a while anyway.

Now, people that go really far to call each hero and item by their "vintage" name do kind of annoy me. If you still call Desolator "Stygian", or Armlet "Mordiggian's, or Faceless Void "Darkterror" I assume that you are trying to flaunt your veteran status, and most of the people that do that aren't even veterans.

I am by no means raging over not knowing the old names. I'm bothered by the blatant obnoxiousness from those who do (well, many of them), flaunt it and go on flaming those who don't. As a result of this now I'm trying to teach myself the old names. Not because I want to, but because some parts of the community are just so harsh to newer players it's easier.

And I can agree to the "I have just always called him that.. It stuck"-part.

You read his comment out of context. He means that its nothing that others should rage about if you don't know the old hero names or class names.

Personally I'll often not even call them by their Dota names, but the model name from Warcraft 3 just because that's the game I've played the most, I played other things other than Dota and I refer to the units universally.

You can easily find out a hero's name by looking at the grey little quote at the bottom of some of the hero's skill descriptions (For the few items I looked at it didn't seem to work). I never played Dota 1, but did people actually call Riki Stealth Assassin, Sven Rogue Knight, and call Weaver that long name with apostrophes?

Anyway, from my experience people are pretty tolerant, when I asked team mates to using Dota 2 terminology they didn't seem to have a problem with that, or they just explained to me what they meant. I doubt it'll take too long before almost everyone moves to Dota 2 terminology anyway, I bet by the game launch (I'm losing track of this whole beta thing.. Is this closed beta, open beta or is this game released already..) Dota 1 terminology will be gone.

I think the best description is 'early access', or 'limited access'.

Been playing Dota 2 for 2.5 years, original Dota terminology doesn't go away. Krob, Furion, Naix, Sylla, PotM, Roof, Dirge, and maybe Rhasta and Trax are still used commonly.
