I've been seriously underrating Luna's Aghs. It's actually a teamfight autowin if you survive BKBs.

Suggest builds for phantom lancer. The one you can put on core PL not some support PL going tranquil glimmers orchid.

Bottle>yasha>bots>diffusal is my go to build.

echo sabre? I personally go Vanguard > Diffusal > Manta > BoTs > Skadi > Abyssal

I go Basi - Magic stick - Vlads - drums - BoT - diffusal - situationals, most often skadi, Manta, Bkb, mkb and heart. Works pretty well for me.

Vanguard is really good on him right now, and not so much Drums after the change. Otherwise, that build looks great!

I can see your point, but i still find Drum of Endurance to be a solid pickup. Yes, it's been nerfed to oblivion, stats wise, but it still gives a little bit of everything PL needs, which is more than i can say for Vanguard. Defensively, Vanguard is the superior choice by far, yes i agree. But is the defensive utility it provides you worth that amount of gold, compared to drums, especially the active component in early teamfights? I feel that drums is still better suited for early game, because it benefits your team,compared to the "selfish" Vanguard.

And yes, you can argue that Vanguard builds into Abyssal Blade now, but then again, i rarely build big stun on ol. Phantom Lancer. That mostly comes down to the picking phase, where if i see something like Ember Spirit or Storm Spirit on the enemy team, i probably wouldn't pick PL, and i'm probably playing support lion or something. I also rarely find myself in a situation where i think back and say, "hmm, maybe if i had vanguard i wouldn't have died" or something along those lines.

It might be a matter of playstyle, since i do exclusively play PL similarly to a pos. 1.5, and actively seek early fights and try to encourage my team to push early and take fights early. I farm in another lane and tp to fights when they start, similar to a spectre, but with more early power, single target damage, and a built in dispel at the cost of lategame potential.
