So today I learned something I thought was impossible. I played Techies, and liked them.

I've been holding off Techies for a long time because I generally find that whenever they are on my team, they feed and do nothing significant past ~30 min.
But today, I played with one of the worst teams I have ever played with. The tidehunter was a flamer who blamed us for not following up on his HORRIBLE ravages, and then AFKed until my mine kills actually gave us a chance. Chaos Knight apparently had no idea how to farm correctly. PA thought initiating with PA is fine as long as you have a ~5 sec BKB. Viper was the only half-decent person on the team, and was probably doing around as well as I would do playing Viper in the same situation.
This Game Saddens Me
They outcarried us hard. They won almost every teamfight. They just destroyed us.
However, I realized what the real purpose of techies was. Not to destroy the enemies early game. Not to cover every spot the enemy team MIGHT go through. Not to go a suicide build and begin feeding the second suicide is obsolete against farmed enemies. Base defense. I swear to God, I destroyed them with mines. The only reason they were able to break in initially is because Viper fed our gem to them trying to fight 1v3 while behind...
But yeah. I feel like techies is a staple of rat doto and countering rat doto. His ability to singlehandedly defend bases against fed carries is no laughing matter. Sorry if you guys hate techies, but I will probably start using him a LOT more, especially against pushing lineups.

You aint alone out there man. I love the Three Stooges of Dota. Funny dialogue, unique gameplay, surprisingly good pushing and defending ability, the list goes on for a while.

Well at least players don't auto-disconnect when Techies is picked, I want to pick him for fun but I'm afraid to see people insta-dq. =/

I once had a Techies on my team who used him in exactly this manor, and it worked an absolute treat! We were getting ruined, because no teamfight, cos Techies. But as soon as they started trying to get into our base, death. We just took a bit of time to realise this is what we had to do.
This gave us time to go and win fight's 4v3/get pick off's and push down towers and rax.

A well played Techies can totally swing a game.

Yep, the way you described it up there is the best way to play the hero. He's so, so good at stopping a push cold, or even turning it around into an ULTRA KILL for your team. However, I still feel like the hero is more of a liability in most cases.

Of course there are certain lineups to pick Techies against, as there are with every hero. He's a good answer to deathball lineups where entire teams push towers instead of one guy or some illusions. It's just bait for your remote mines.

The problem is that he can't really do much else. Your lanes and teamfight will be really weak, and you have to rely on getting kills continuously throughout the game. A good Techies player can only do so much, but eventually they're going to catch on and start countering you.

This is by far the best way of using Techies: securing objectives. The base defense is strong, but if you're in a more offensive position, you can secure enemy tower kills by mining/warding probable routes of attack.

He's also possibly the best Divine Rapier carrier in the game. Largest attack range of any hero, and a suicide-on-command button. That being said, this is always a last resort, if the actual carries on your team can't carry. :D

I was playing techies, and we were losing for most of the game. They even contained us in our base. BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT, Aghanim's Scepter-powered remotes deal too much damage, and we managed to team-wipe the enemy thanks to magnus combos! Then we pushed to their base and won instantly. COMEBACK GAMING *****ES.
