ahah! but.. Razor? Troll Warlord?

Razor has pretty much the same role as Viper (lane-dominator, very irritating and probably the hero that has to be focused on in fights), so mek would naturally be a core item. Troll? I have no idea.

You build Mek on heroes who need tankiness. Because it gives you the most cost-effective HP for the price (+345 HP and +5 armor). Compare to a Vanguard that only gives you +250 HP and damage block.

And you build Mek because you want to win teamfights from the 10 to 30 minute mark and push some towers.

Mek is not a support item, it's a tank item. That's why a lot of supports are actually very bad mek heroes while a lot of cores are really good mek heroes.

Viper only needs to be tanky to be effective. He doesn't need damage items until much later in the game. You only need to survive long enough with this hero so that you can deal Nethertoxin damage on low HP enemies, and be annoying with Corrosive Skin.

Build Mek on heroes who need to be tanky to be effective and who have the mana pool to support it.

Well I usually get it on ranged heroes that are too squishy to do their job....
Especially on Huskar its fun - I mean get yourself low in a fight drop to 100 and then pop it.
And you don't need a lot of mana as a Huskar.
I wonder if there are more mid laners than Huskar, Viper and Razor that can get it.
Could a DP get it after Eul's btw?

I don't think you build Mek on heroes to tank them up.

I think you build Mek on heroes because you want to be grouping as 5 and fighting/pushing at a relatively early mark, and thus a Mek gives you crazy value.

At least nowadays, because even on heroes that hardly use there mana pool, it's still a big mana cost.

Viper builds Mek, because he's a lane dominator, and thus gets it early, and is extremely strong early on. Thus wants to fight, and push to leverage that advantage whilst he can (Because sadly Viper farms soooo slowly, and thus also needs to snowball). Razor built Mek for similar reasons, because again he wanted to fight early and push. If you want to tank up with these heroes, but don't want to fight and deathball and push, there's simply better items to get.

It's also the reason why Junglers like Enigma and Chen build Mek, not because they to tank up, but because they want to push, and fight early.

It's kind of a deathball item.

Since you just can't have enough Chaos Breaker.

Mek troll is bad

Razor is to help being the agressive nature that he is. If you wanna DAVAIDAVAIDAVAI, or just tank up tower shots a good old mek can change the whole thing. Mek is such a good item, it even gives him armor n ****! Who doensnt want that?

Which hero should I buy Mek on? Tanky heroes?

There are 2 qualities a Hero needs in order to be a good Mek Carrier.

1. They need to be Tanky enough to stay in the middle of fights and be able to pop it

2. You need to have the Mana Pool to use it along with all other Abilities (twice or more depending on their Cooldowns)

#1 isn't that hard to come by, but rules out most Supports, #2 is a lot harder to come by and rules out most Supports.

Huskar, Viper, Outworld Devourer, etc. are quite good Mek Carriers because of this. You can build a Mek on a not so ideal Hero like Lion though, it's just not as effective since you have to watch your Mana and positioning more.

My take on this is that, Mekansm is an item that can be built either by a support or a core, depending on what your team wants it for.

1. If your team is a strong mid-game centered lineup, and you want to 5 man during the mid game, you would need one of your cores to pick it up (supports wouldn't be able to afford it by then). Ideally, your mid or your offlaner would buy the mek, since your 1 position is busy building carry items. This is where the usual core heroes like Viper, Razor, OD, Troll Warlord, etc build the mek. As an option, if your mid laner needs core items to be effective, and can't afford to be building a mek, your offlaner would buy the mek instead. These are the examples where heroes like Bristleback, Tidehunter, or occasionally, even a Timbersaw might build a mek.

TL;DR: In mid-game centric lineups, a core would usually build the mek, which allows the team to 5 man push towers during the mid game, when they are strongest.

2. If your team is either gearing up for a late game (usually 4 protect 1) or has a jungling support ( Enigma, Chen or Enchantress, for example), the support can usually find the farm to pick up the mek, leaving the cores free to go for other items. These are the cases where the support usually buys the mek. If you have a jungler like Enigma or Chen, you can usually still get the mek for your mid game pushes. However, the downside of this is having to draft a greedy support lineup, which might leave your lanes weaker.

3. If your position 4 or 5 is buying the mek (and you don't have a jungler), it means that your mek is going to be pretty late. These are examples where a Crystal Maiden or Lich is buying the mek. The effectiveness of this mek will be much lower, since it will be much later into the game, and the burst HP regain is less and less useful.
