How exactly do you define support? buying wards? getting utility items? babysitting the carry?

The Supports are the Heroes that have lower priority when getting Farm. Compared to your Safe Laner and Mid who are most likely going to be your Position 1 and 2 (not necessarily in that order), Supports have to spend more time creating space and ensuring that the 1 and 2 get Farm (and sometimes the 3, e.g. when they get zoned out and need their Blink Dagger asap).

Getting Items like Pipe and Mek don't make you a Support, although picking up Utility on a Position 2 is usually a good idea. <}3

when speaking about "unconventional" supports (mainly those which usually are more popular as carries), i think that it all comes down "spell value". Naga Sirens spells for instance scale exceptionally well throughtout the whole game: Long range CC with interrupt character; aoe -armor; scouting via illusions; and an insanely strong (counter)initiation tool. She doesnt necesarrily need items to use those skills to their maximum potential, while her carries can utilize on them efficently.

To me its all about if you are wasting a heroes potential, when you put them into a support role. How much can your own team utilize on your own abilities. Naga Siren, Alchemist, Wraith King and Tusk for instance seem quite viable.

With heroes like Sven, Huskar, Chaos Knight or Drow Ranger however, it seems like a waste of potentail to me tho....Well Aghanim's Scepter Sven is quite debateable i guess...
