Hi,

I am new to Dota 2 and MOBA as a whole. Been trolling the pub games for 2 weeks now since I got a beta key from a friend. Just wanted to try and find out first hand what's the fuss all about. Now I think I am addicted to this game. Ditched Diablo 3 for now.

My question is should I focus on learning 2-3 heroes or random every game just to learn multiple roles. Random is quite fun, I do contribute a lot early since I would have extra moolah for donkey. Some unpopular hero like the Witch Doctor (he is, isn't he?) is fun to play with.

Is there anyone I could party with since pubs games are full of quitters :(

Yeah, you really should find 1-3 play buddies with similar skill level than you are to enjoy the pubs to the fullest. Also learning only 2-3 heroes isn't necessary. I usually play only 3 heroes myself, but that is because I enjoy them the most and I usually have an opportunity to play them :D. So play what you want as long as it fits to the team.

I think you should take the time and play every hero at least once to familiarize yourself with them, so you know what to expect when playing with/against them. But after that or while doing that you'll naturally find a few that you like more than the rest and play with them more. I would also recommend reading up and watching videos/livestreams for heroes to get an idea what to expect and know how to play with an against them. Like ^ said, it is easier for most people to play with a few friends. If nothing else it narrows down the random leavers.

Learning one or just a few heroes at this point is best. It allows you to familiarize yourself with the game more, rather than constantly being confused by having a new hero each game. Also, try support heroes, not carries.

I don't think it matters overly much personally. You will learn the game effectively through experience, full stop. Whether you want to master a handful of heroes or be average at all of them is entirely your decision.

I agree with the former point a great deal - grab about 2-3 heroes you really enjoy and stick with them until you want to try someone else out. Don't try a new hero every single game but don't restrict yourself, either.

As for the carries part, it shouldn't matter at all. Since he'll be playing with people of a similar skill level anyway, though he might not be able to cs all that well, neither will anyone else in the game, and he won't be underfarmed, comparatively. If he was shoved into a game of otherwise experienced players, I'd agree, don't play carries, but for now, play whatever you enjoy, I'd say.

I'd suggest trying 1-3 heroes from each Strength, Agility, and Intelligence. And choose which one to fit you're team balance. I recommend not playing solo mid heroes and work on the important early game strategies. last hitting, pulling, warding, ect...the basics.

Carries require a more extensive knowledge of the game, mostly knowing what to build, how to last hit, when it's appropriate to farm, etc. And there are only 3 skill levels, high medium and low. Even if he gets put in low, there are players that aren't new to the game there.

There really isn't a rating system in which you get matched with players from similar rating? That's surprising. If that's true then I'll agree somewhat.

I still wouldn't veer too far from carries or if you end up getting better at the game and put into a higher bracket, you don't want your first game being one in which you're against harder opponents with a new archetype of hero.

Don't not play them all together, but try and get familiar with a few easy ones (like Skeleton King).
