LoL is better. Being more complicated does not equall better game. HoN is overly confusing and needlessly difficult. I was able to get MVP on a few games and decimate the other team after just a few games played of HoN. So dont troll me and say I'm a nub. What I mean is that I am good at HoN yet the needless mechanics mke it unenjoyable.

Dota is like Everquest. HoN is like every MMORPG after Everquest. And LoL is like WOW. I loved everquest. Thought the copycats were good. Then played WoW and never looked back. It doesn't mean I don't appreciate Everquest and what it did for the genre. But it was time to move on and evolve. Again let me be clear I played ultima online(old one), shadowbane, and darkfall. Three of the most hardcore pvp "lose all your equipment and items if you die" MMORPGs you will ever play. I enjoyed them a lot but overall WoW is still a better game regardless of "care bear" status.

LoL is innovative yet simple, appeals to the masses and is ultimately more fun to play. And last I checked the reason to play games, sports, etc initially is for fun then you get competitive. I want so much to like DotA2 but it seems like they didn't even try to get creative. Speaking of creativity. LoL Dominion map, look it up. One more reason they are ahead. Ohh yeah and they won most fans award at gamescom. Hahahahaha take that dota2.

Edit: I don't mean to say DotA2 won't be fun. Nor do I mean to say that it won't have a huge player base. I also do not want to deter people from playing it. This is not a LoL advertisement post heheh. Just my 2cents on the subject. That is all.

Ugh there are always threads on 'best game'

I will point out the differences in play style between the two (Dota and LoL)

Main ones:
-LoL has the distinct class of Tank. The Tanks have taunts much like axe's skill. If they do not have a taunt they have a shield or some other form of damage block.

-Towers are more fragile but hit harder, they also priorities creeps (minions in LoL) over heroes (champions), unless you attack an enemy player. This allows for faster pushing with creep waves and solo pushing.

-LoL has 'bushes' which are areas where you become unseen to the enemy who are not in bushes. This allows players to camp the bushes and adds a new strategic element to LoL

-Stats in LoL are very different, including common Crit % items, stackable Life Steal, Spell Vamp (life steal on magical abilities), Ability Power (increases spell damage) and Cooldown Reduction (reduces cooldown timers up to 40%)

-Rax (Inhibs) respawn in LoL, this leads to teams waiting for them to respawn and having a fighting chance, it also makes games drag on if the teams are evenly balanced

-The Jungle in LoL is static, while in Dota random neutrals appear at camps

-The map size in Dota is bigger or the heroes move slower, since it seems much faster to move around the map in LoL

-In LoL everyone has a tp back to fountain whenever they want, there are no tp scrolls.

-Everyone can have a free blink in LoL on a long cd

-LoL has a much lower learning curve, leading to over agressive players without much map awarness in some cases, and these players when playing Dota carry the same style of play from LoL which makes LoL players seem noob because the LoL tactics cause feeding in Dota

-LoL is a much more ganky style of gameplay compared to Dota where people farm more

-The creeps hit for less in LoL and the Champions seem more tanky, allowing for a more agressive early game

-Dota starts off slow (laning phase is longer and more static) while becoming faster paced as the game moves to mid game

-LoL starts fast (capable of being more agressive) but becomes slower paced as teams wait for their Rax (Inhibs) to respawn

I don't think they should be compared as they appeal to different audiences, Dota 2 is mainly for players of Dota 1, while LoL appeals to the masses and is more newbie friendly

I agree with everything you said. Lol appeals to the masses like I said. They made it this way though from original dota and it works beautifully. All I'm saying is dota two could have tried to change it up a bit instead of being the exact same game. Dota2 seems more like a remake than a sequel and I guess I just expected more. However I wasn't following it religiously so maybe that was my bad for expecting anything.

I don't think you understand the nuances at all in DotA 2, which leads you to the conclusion you came to.

It's going to be far from the exact same game. There'll be the same characters but who doesn't want to play their favorites like pudge, etc.?

"Valve's approach to Dota 2 is unusual in that the gameplay itself is remaining almost entirely untouched. "Our first reaction is to assume that [design elements are] there for a reason," project lead Erik Johnson explains. "IceFrog is one of the smartest designers we've ever met. He's made so many good decisions over the years in building the product. He virtually never makes a decision that doesn't have some reasoning behind it and a way to pick apart the logic behind it." This approach means that Dota 2 basically is DotA-Allstars with new technology."

Valve's orignally goal was to mainly just update the graphics of Dota and give the game dedicated servers, they never wanted to revamp the gam to begin with.

Many people love Dota but have to rely on servers like Garena to play, they have hackers that ruin the game. There are few leaver bans on many of the Servers, and the Lag is bad on alot of them.

Valve is giving us Dota that can be played against other people around the world, instead of being stuck at home playing ai maps or playing with hackers and leavers.

The main reason I played LoL was because playing Dota games online is not an easy or fun experience in my experience, while LoL had a stable platform where I could play whenever I wanted and not have to deal with hackers or 5 seconds of delay

Also Valve and IF would constantly update Dota 2 like they do to TF2, not completely screw over the players by changing a ton of things that they would have done through several patches

LoL still doesn't have replay system or observer mode...

How can it be better?

Final word

There is no better... Only what you the player prefers

Never apply the word better unless it is to LoZ: OoT is better than Superman 64 (god that was an awful game)

And no matter your opinion, many others will disagree and not care and continue to play the game you deem worse

In my opinion IceFrog receives too much credit for simply balancing game play and listening to his community. Dota isn't his creation, nor has he ever really made any risks to change the blueprint. The Dota forums are the reason the game has lasted so long. I enjoy LoL, but am looking forward to fun heroes instead of watered down repeats that riot continues to pump out. I'm ready to enjoy both games in their respectful corners.

Another difference between LoL and DotA is that LoL emphasizes on having spammable skills, so they need to be watered down as to not have really strong spammability. DotA has skills with longer cooldowns, but feel much more rewarding when you use them correctly. Over half of the characters have some sort of CC in dota.

Some of the most rewarding skills to land:
-Fissure
-Black Hole
-Nether Swap
-Meat Hook
-Arrow
