He's easily countered, that's why he's not played in competitive anymore. Also, he's OP in pubs cause not many people know how to play him => they don't know how to play against him.

I find, at the very least, that Silence and Stuns shuts him down fairly quickly.

He was heavily used when Quas-Wex was the way to go and the EMP range and channel-time was ridiculous. But this build became unviable when EMP was nerfed and Invoker's base damage got shot to hell. Now he is easily outlaned in CS unless he goes Quas-Exort, which prevents him from being a good crowd control before 25 minutes.

Rune control is really important these days with Nyx, Puck, Magnus mids, who can pick up an Invis or a Haste and bring a lane down. Invoker has no rune control.

Pugna can deal a pretty hefty sum of damage to Invoker simply thanks to Nether Ward.

Also, any reliable silence/stun, followed up with a quick burst can really shut the poor guy down.

Dust, Gem, and Wards can really screw him over if he tries to ghost walk

Any Silence does completely destroy him, or some good burst damage, such as Nyx or Tiny.
I got to Notable, Thanks!
