Next time you might be a bit more specific and just tell us what he built or what items exactly you ask about.

I am just gonna assume you are referring to the Linken's Sphere and the Silver Edge as the rest is pretty much standard.


The sphere is for Lion's Hex. Hex is pretty much a hard counter to Black King Bar (at least 3k+). If he didn't get it Lion could just initiate him in every teamfight and focus him down with his team.
While Linken's Sphere is actually easier to use than Black King Bar you have to bear in mind that a well-used Black King Bar is usually more effective unless you play against heroes that would completely destroy you with one single-target skill (particularly but not only Bloodseeker, Legion Commander and Lion.


Silver Edge on the other hand was gotten for two reasons:
1. You guessed it - to break Phantom Assassins passives.
2. They were leading by a pretty huge margin at the point he got it. That means that the enemy supports are starved for money. This in turn means that they can't afford that much detection in the form of Sentry Wards.
