I've played with that lane before as the Abaddon, it was successful, mainly because the laning carry was AM. I've also been the Axe in an Axe Omni lane, also against an AM, which was also pretty successful.

But in many cases, Jungling the Axe is the right call if you can't threaten the lane. Trilanes with a carry that doesn't suck at laning (so, not AM Spectre Morph Lesh Slark) will easily crush your dual offlane.

Axe is an phenomanal laner, given the right situation, but can be sucky in plenty of others. Another classic is the Axe/ Dazzle lane - all your creeps are belong to us. Axe/ Dark Seer can pretty much take over the lane and the jungle too.

I don't play against Axe all that much in pubs, but from what I gather from the people I play with, he must be played jungle, only jungle, and never leave the jungle until he has three items.

In all seriousness, his whole usefulness centers around his AoE bkb piercing disable, which is huge for shutting down Juggernauts or Sven before he can stun and ult.
