Alchemist is a very versative hero, but the most popular way to play him is as a straight carry. An Alch with high levels of Chemical Rage is nigh unkillable - add some DPS items and start having fun.
If you drop and pick up a % mana regen item (like a Sobi) while in Chemical Rage form the item will continue to give you mana based on your now increased base mana regen (free mana!)
The other common build is to play Alch as a tanky supportish, ganker hero. Instead of farming all game, Alch can also go put his long duration stun to good use.
