Pudge is a ganker. He tries to pick off an enemy hero into an isolated spot with hook and use his combo to seal their fate. Lategame Flesh Heap allows Pudge to still mantain a presence through sheer tankyness.
Dismember's range is longer than Rot's - make sure Rot is hitting the enemy before you use Dismember.
Rot's self-damage is simply magic damage. It can be used to suicide (denying gold and exp) and is prevented/reduced by magic immunity/spell resistance.
You can turn Rot on/off while channelling Dismember without interrupting it. Dismember gives off a global sound, so don't use it on Roshan or things like that.
