1) Mana pool and mana regeneration
2) Health point
3) Extra effect
4) Damage per second
This is my first thought of Omniknight. Let this be my hypothesis.
First of all why did I say he need mana? Omniknight were picked not because his stat nor his damage. The main reason he is pick is because of his skills. How can we maximize his potential is with sufficient mana. If he can cast his spell when ever its need, he is utilized.
Second, it is generally can be said Health point but what I want to appoint here is his survivability. Omniknight need to survive for at least after he cast all his spell. But casting all his spell is not enough. He needs to cast it on perfect timing. The worst case is he is dead without using any of his skill. A sufficient survivability is important so he can buy some time on timing his skills and casting it. Besides that I also sees some potential on him to be tanker or initiator which will be explore furthermore later.
Third, what i mean by extra effect is actually equip him with item with effect. I doesn't matter whether it is passive or active. Example of passive item is Vladmir's Offering, ***ult Cuirass and Drum of Endurance. Eaxmple of active item is Mekansm, Refresher Orbs and Pipe of Insight. This were just example, furthermore details will be discuss in next post. By adding some effect, he will become much more valuable asset.
Lastly, Damage per second is his last priority. He can help hits which on most cases he just wandering around the battlefield and help from behind. This is such an embarrassing especially for Stregth-Melee hero. I can see his potential of being on first line hero rather stay behind like a coward and I can see his potential on helping hitting rather than just wandering. However it is a waste to make him as pure DPS hero, but maximize his potential so he can help hitting and give some damage is another thing.

1) Power Tread - Don't go for Arcane Boots, Power tread is the best item for carrying
2) Drum of Endurance - This synergy with Degen Aura, Most importantly it active skill act like mini Mask of Madness
3) Orchid Malevolence - Don't go for arcane and soul ring which delay the item. This is the best carry item for high mana regen type. Yes this is carry item, Clinkz carrying the game with this.
4) Eye of Skadi - Personally I think this is better for Omniknight compared to S&Y since Omniknight use lots of mana. This will provide tons of mana pool.
DPS Omniknight is viable since he can become invulnerable for few second. Repel is the thing which make him to have great potential on DPS. Purification also help a lot on farming. However, personally I don't think it is a good choice to carry with Omniknight but DPS Omniknight is different thing. However thanks to Mightycookie for his comment, I will experiment his idea later.
@Mightycookie, I'll try to experiment your idea and can you give some item build that you use in Carry type Omniknight besides S&Y and Crystalis.
the thing went like this.
the opponent had 4 carries and a dazzle. so i picked omni as a hard counter. then my team proceeded to pick 4 other supports.we had no carry nor pushing potential, but we had team fight. so i decided i would farm and thankfully the supports allowed me to. we started to lose the game while i was farming. then i had some core carry items. had a S&Y and a crystalis. then i went around helping my team and we managed to catch up a bit. then we had a big team fight. we decimated them. they couldnt do anything to use and i had some solid dps. so yeah, i think omni can carry. its not a waste but its situational.
