I really don't get why this is a "good" item on a lot of heroes. Why is it? Sure you can make a push go a bit faster, or just maybe get an escape with the MS. And it only has 5 charges. So what is so good about it?

The stats. They are awesome, cheap, and suited for everyone (built mainly from a Bracer). Everyone loves extra HP, armor and mana.

Compare it to an Ultimate Orb. It gives 1 less stat, but has an easier build-up, gives MS, and has a nice aura.

It's an item that gives both stats and movement speed. It's essentially a mid-game item for carries.

See it like a mix between an Ultimate Orb and a Yasha.

Lots of heroes need early game stats. They need strength to be tanky, agility for more damage, and intelligence to solve their mana issues.

Example : Mirana needs to tank up, she needs DPS, and she needs more mana for her skills, also she needs movement speed for chasing and escaping, which makes her a very good drum hero. For the same reasons, Spectre, Terrorblade, Tiny or Brewmaster are good drum heroes.

What it gives is very good for lots of carries who need to come online quickly in the mid-game especially those who have mana issues.

Drum is highly overrated for some heores though. Whenever I see a Crystal Maiden making a drum when she could be making an item with actual impact instead like a Blink Dagger, a Force Staff or a Mekansm, I always bang my head against the wall for that gold waste for unnecessary stats on an already poor support. Drum is mainly an selfish item for right-click heores and it's really negligible in the "support your team" aspect. Even in the "get more HP" aspect it's really inefficient.

On pushing part, I remember that item used to able to restock charges by getting the recipe itself.

it's kind of overrated. Used to be really good when games could be decided by 20 minutes and carry/mid wanted something cheap and effective. Now it's not, since it's a lot easier to delay for lategame. Still viable on supports, but they're often better off with a force or blink

Why the actual hell would you EVER make drum on a support? You're completely limited by low farm to have any kind of game impact and you blow 2K gold on an item that has none. While there are so many 2K gold items that are game-changing like blink, mek or forcestaff.

Getting more HP in invalid. Point Booster = more HP and mana for half the price. And well on your way to your Aghs while drum is a dead end.
Supporting your team is also invalid, drum doesn't support your team. If you want to get effective HP and support your team you have Mek, pipe or Crimson thingy.

Drum is a right-click item, because if you don't need the agility and attack speed you're wasting a big part of your money. So if you're not playing semi-carry Omniknight, Abaddon or something...why you make dis?

Drum is good on AGI heroes and decent on STR heroes, but it's horribly inefficient on INT heroes because INT heroes don't need agility, ever.

because we're in a meta where 90% of games go late. It was a pretty good item on core heroes when you could realistically expect to decide a game with a 10 minute drum. Now you can't, and that means the item mainly serves to delay bigger items, and then get sold for inventory space.

I didn't mean it's necessarily good on supports, I meant that supports are the only heroes on whom it's not a complete waste. Because they're not guaranteed to finish bigger items like a core is, and they're also not going to sell it for inventory space at 35-40 minutes like a core often will. As I said it's usually inferior to blink, force, or even vlads in that price range, but there are times when it warrants consideration.

I HAVE BEEN SUMMONED!!! I JUST LOOOOOVVEEE DRUMS. There was one point I bought drums on heroes like Nature's Prophet and even Morphling. I can't go by a week without buying drums at least once. The stats are so good and it's just too easy to build.

But in every competitive game I see right now, drum is absolute core on Spectre, Terrorblade, Slark, Templar Assassin, I even see drum Medusa (why would you ever make a drum on a hero with no mid game? As much as I hate midas/helm/linkens ricing Medusa is really THE hero for that).

Because the games go late doesn't mean you don't need to fight early. Fighting early for hard carries is actually rewarded in this patch.

It's not like "every team needs a drum" for the 5% movement speed bonus xD
