Witch Doctor can be a very good ganker and killer with his Maledict + Death Ward combo. However, this requires him to get to a dangerously close range. Thus, another popular build is to use his heal and long range stun for a more supporting role. In this case, get a level of Voodoo at 2 and consider delaying Maledict for some stats (it only gets really good with 3+ levels anyway).
Remember that you can manually select and control your ward. Choose the best targets for it!
Using Lothar's doesn't cancel your Ward chanelling. However, this only matters if you get tons of farm in a pub :-)
