Introduction-Offlane Magnus

WATCH THIS VIDEO BEFORE YOU READ ANY OF THIS !!

Magnus is a versatile hero that could be played in the offlane with some reasonable amount of success. Unfortunately He has recently fallen out of favor against better offlaners who are able to gank earlier on and control the pace of the game without much farm such as Clockwerk ,Earthshaker and Tusk.

He is not an easy hero to play with and needs some amount of farm and levels in orderto be effective. Without farm it is rather difficult for him to make a reasonable impact in the game.

It wise to pick Magnus on the offlane against a greedy jungler in the enemy team such as Enigma / Chen, so that he is able to get as much experience and contest the lane as much as possible.

Item choices

OPENING BUILD

Build 1- Against a contestable/greedy lane.

When the opponent team picked a Jungler or decided to go for a dual lane set up, contesting the offlane comes to mind. The rational behind this opening build is to have as much sustain as possible to contest the lane. If the lane is going in well in your favour, you might consider getting bottle first instead of boots, this will allow more regen and such you are able to apply more pressure in the lane. WARNING! You are very vulnerable to ganks from support/mid without boots and it is still advised to play with caution while trying to apply as much pressure as possible to the lane.

Build 2- Against a Hard Lane.

Boots, tango and clarity (or a tp scroll which you can buy from the sideshop) are the way to go usually. With this opening build your goal is simple, to get as much last hit as possible with your shockswaves and don't die! If your feeling lucky, you might want to replace clarity for a TP scroll. Usually, the lane would be slightly pushed towards the enemy's safelane when the creeps meet, this is when you can buy a TP. A TP is a FULL regen for 75 GOLD! You can also use the TP scroll to punish aggressive tower diving from the opponent team, it really opens the game up for magnus who are having an extremely difficult lane. The only downside is that you will be leaving your lane and be missing out on some experience or lasthits (this is also the case when your using clarity potion but not as long)

EARLY GAME ITEMS

Arcane boots VS Bottle
I dont recommend getting both for early game as it would delay your blink by quite some time. However it is crucial that you get EITHER one of this as either one would give enough regen to contest and get more farm from the lane. It is up to your preference however here are some guidelines:
-Get arcane boots when you dont have map control/do no have wards in the river and your mid is getting bottle.
-Get bottle when you have map control and able to constantly take runes.

MID GAME ITEMS

Blink dagger before any other items period. Once you get your blink dagger, complete your arcane boots if you haven't.

Now the next item that comes to mind is usually Forcestaff. Forcestaff is a versatile item that can be used defensively and offensively to get a good initiations off. Forcestaff allows magnus stay out of range from enemy sight in the day and yet still be range of his ulitimate, RP.
Day vision for most heroes = 1800
Blink + RP max range = 1610 units
Forcestaff + Blink + RP max range = 2210 units

Another item you might consider is Shadowblade. Shadowblade has essasntially the same function as forcestaff, it helps you to escape and allows you to be in a better position for initiation. However the added benefit of Shadowblade is it allows you to scout the enemy heroes, and more DPS which might help you to farm faster. The tradeoff would be it is more expensive than forstaff and does not give you any intelligence.

LATE GAME ITEMS

Shiva's Guard is a solid choice as gives you a larger Mana Pool and Armor. More importantly it gives you more control in the team fights as you are able to slowdown the enemy carries.Get this item when you have little farm and there is a lot of right clicking carries in the enemy team.

Octarine Core like Shiva's guard, it is a solid choice too. It increases your health and mana pool. More importantly , it reduces cool down of all your SKILLS and ITEMS. This means that Magnus is able to maneuver better in fights with lower cool down in his blink dagger and force staff.

Refresher orb is for those who want aspire to be Ar1sE . 2 well placed RPs will secure you the game. However there is two major drawback to this, mana constraints and the skill required to pull this off well is high. It is still a good item choice though (what could go wrong with 2 RPs?) and you should not let these two drawbacks holding you back.

Friends and Foes

Friends
Well, Magnus usually goes well with any type of lineup that you draft. Traditional melee carries such as Sven, Antimage and Troll warlord are your usual friends. Empower and RP could never go wrong with these type of heroes. Don't forget that empower has a good synergy with other range heroes too such as Gyrocopter,Drow and Lina.

Foes
There are 3 heroes that you need to really want to avoid. These 3 are, Silencer , Spectre and Zeus. They can mess up your Blink RP timings and such it is best to avoid picking Magnus against these 3. Another thing to look out for is try to figure our the COUNTER INITIATION CAPABILITIES of the opposing team. Heroes such as Tide, Enigma and Sandking have strong counter initiation capabilities. You don't want to Blink RP and skewer back a TideHunter towards your team as Tide Hunter would just dispel your RP with his kraken shell and cast Ravage. Keep this few things in mind when your trying to find a good initiation off, would the enemy team be able to salvage the fight with a counter initiation ? Where are these heroes hiding? Am i able to get a clean fight engagement off? etc.
