The every man Spectre build

Introduction

This is the guide to playing Spectre better than your average pub player. Many Spectre players don't take advantage of how deadly she can be in the mid game and hopefully this guide will inspire you to play a more active Spectre. At heart, Spectre is still hard carry farmer, but she has a kit that allows her to get kills if you utilize them properly.

Skills

Disclaimer: Not every game you play is the same, so level up Spectre's skills as needed. What I put up there is what you would level up in an ideal scenario. Also, make sure you read the description of the abilities before reading this.

Spectral Dagger:
This skill is what you'll be leveling up first. Spectral dagger is a slow, makes you move faster, and allows you to move through literally anything. You should use this move whenever you're going in for a kill. It is also great for escape as it allows you to move through trees to a place where you can safely TP away.

Desolate:
This skill makes Spectre's ganking potential ridiculously high. Finding an enemy by themselves will allow for you to get an easy kill with the insane amounts of damage that this give. Also, it works on illusions and is the main reason for building Manta Style.

Dispersion:
This is the skill that you'll be leveling last. This move increases Spectre's tanking capabilities significantly and is one of the reason's she is such a hard carry. The damage is also dispersed to nearby enemies which increases DPS a little. Illusions get dispersion as well which is another reason for buying Manta.

Haunt:
This skill is the other reason that Spectre is such an amazing character. This move allows you to enter any team fight or gank without having to take the time to get into position. Because of this, you can farm until it's time to get kills. Also, all the illusions that Spectre makes can proc desolate and disperse damage, making it deadly in team fight.

Items

Disclaimer: Not every game you play is the same, so buy items according to Spectre's needs. What I put up there is what you would buy in an ideal scenario.

Core Build:
As for your early game, the tangos and salves will let you stay in lane without having to go back to heal. The quelling blade will help you get early game last hits to get the farm that Spectre so desperately needs. The iron branches are just good all around as they give you basic stats. Phase boots are my boots of preference as the speed boost and damage make last hitting easier and help with Spectre's chase. That isn't to say that other boots aren't good though. Tranquil boots are good if you are being harassed a lot while power treads a fine alternative to phase boots as they can give a bit of much needed agility or strength.

The first damaging item you'll want to rush is Diffusal Blade. Diffusal blade is a great item because your illusions receive the feedback damage but more importantly, it has an amazing passive. The purge is a fantastic slow and should be used in ganks and when securing kills. Using this in conjunction with Spectral Dagger and Phase Boots active make Spectre almost impossible to escape. Buy the recipe for Diffusal Blade 2 only after using up all the charges.

Next, you'll want to get Manta Style. The main reason for this is Desolate. The two illusion gets the 65 pure damage passive and the damage is insane. The two illusions will also benefit from the Diffusal Blade that you just built, making your ganking damage insane.

Late Game:
As for late game, the first thing you will want to get after Manta is a survivability item. Heart of Tarrasque is a personal favorite, but both Eye of Skadi and Satanic are fine. Heart works better with the illusions as they don't get Satanic's life steal, but Satanic is much better in super late game. Eye of Skadi is good if you feel that you need even more slow. Also, if the team has a lot of lock down, build BKB, but personally I've found it less useful than other items as normally my Specter is covered in illusions, but as I said, each game is situational. Use your best judgement.

After your survivability item you need more damage. Butterfly works well with illusions as they get the agility damage and the miss chance makes you harder to kill. Daedalus is great and the crits will increase your DPS by an insane amount. Daedalus also gives illusions crits. Assault Cuirass is a personal favorite as it gives armor, attack speed, and a fantastic aura that also decreases enemy armor. MKB is a must assuming anybody else on the other team has build butterfly, no excuses. Skull Basher and Abyssal Blade are only really necessary if the team has a carry that is giving you 1v1 trouble (Lifestealer, Alchemist, maybe Faceless Void). Lastly is Mjolnir, and I don't really like it, but it's fine I guess.

Now the most important thing about late game is that you have Boots of Travel before you fill up your last item slot. It is unacceptable to not have TP's, so you need these going into late game. Also, assuming that you're going into the latest of late games, sell Diffusal Blade and Manta for some of the late game items above. Their utility is very high, even in late game, but once you're six stocked, you can sell them more better carry items.

Town Portal Scrolls:
Always carry these around, I swear to god. Oh no, they cost ****ing 135 gold. GET THEM!

How to play Spectre

Early Game:
You should spend your early farming... preferably a support babysit. Spectre is very farm dependent so spend your early game being very cautious but if you can get a kill safely be sure to take advantage of that opportunity, but I cannot stress enough that you need to be safe. Dying will make the rest of the game much harder for you. Once you get Haunt, try to use that to score some kills. Map awareness is key.

Middle Game:
This is when you should have Diffusal Blade, with this you should be chasing down people and using Haunt to score a kill whenever possible. In this phase of the game, you can gank, or you can farm. It depends of the tempo of the game. But don't forget underestimate the damage that Desolate gives. Once you get Manta, getting kills should be that much easier.

Late Game:
This is when you should have your tank item. Having that tankiness will allow you to be right in the middle of battle. This phase of the game is about sticking with the team for team fight. Be sure to be smart in identifying the threats on their team. You'll want to kill people with disables first.

Conclusion

Play Spectre. She's fun and a better ganker that most people expect. I hope you enjoyed my guide and if I left something out or you think there could be a better addition to my build, feel free to comment. Also, I suggest reading the "Spectre the Alternative Guides (ANTI alt-tab)" Spectre build by SP12. It has some interesting alternatives that are for the most part viable.
