In the early game you need 2 things:
1. High attack damage so you can easily get last hits and denies.
2. Healing stuff so you dont die while farming.
Once you get your blink dagger (or shadow blade) you should pay attention to the map and do 2 things:
1. Looking for heros to duell. (At the beggining supports mostly, but later core heros as well)
2. While your duell is on cool down, try to push lanes
