Kunkka is a strong dpser with a great AoE presence. If he can get off the torrent + boat combo, the damage and stun time makes for a great lead for his team. Tidebringer also lets Kunkka be one of the best melee laners in the game. He's solid in either a solo lane or in a dual lane with a babysitter (preferably someone that can set up torrent).
If you get Shadow Blade, use it offensively to splash the backstab damage using Tidebringer.
Starting from level 2 of X Marks the Spot it is possible to set up a guaranteed Torrent hit - consider getting it earlier if you are good at pulling the combo off. XMtS's Return can also be used to break Channeling/TPs
You can get hood or vanguard early if you are struggling
