Huskar is used for a few different roles. He is used as a strong lane controller due to his 0 cd orb, an anti-tank due to his ultimate and a ganker/initiator once you have Blink dagger. He does amazingly well when the opposing team doesn't have strong burst damage to beat out Inner Vitality's insane regen - Huskar at low hp does massive DPS.
Once you have lifesteal, the only way to cast Burning Spear is through autocast (prioritise lifesteal in teamfights, though)
Getting magic resistance and/or BKB work against the self-damage part of your ultimate.
