Gaze upon Medusa's beauty, and dispair! Kingmc23's Guide to Medusa

Introduction

Hello, my name is Kingmc23, and this is my guide to Medusa. Medusa the Gorgon is a character that I am quite fond of, due to the fact that I love both Greek Myth and farming in Dota 2. Medusa is a hard carry hero, one of the three hardest carrying heroes in Dota 2. This build is my opinion, and you definitely do not have to take it as fact. I personally like this build because it leads to me having extremely fun to play games, and as a casual Dota 2 player that is what I look for. Hope that you guys appreciate this build setup. In short, Medusa destroys in the late game, her skills synchronizing to fight against a lot of opponents, take a lot of damage, and generally help her team win big teamfights. HOWEVER, what balances this hero is the fact that she can contribute very little in the early game, is slow and has no solid escape until level six, and has some very poor stats. Given time and space by her team, she can be a killer late, but if ganked and killed a lot in the early game, she won't be effective until 60 minutes in.

Pros / Cons

Pros:
Very hard carry later in the game
Ult sets up teamfights for right clickers like Juggernaut, Antimage, and Legion commander very well.
Can harass in lane well with her right clicks along with Mystic Snake.
Will shut down certain illusion heroes and heroes that pick up Manta Style, like Chaos Knight, Naga Siren, and Terrorblade with her Split Shot - Ultimate combo.

Cons:
Very low base stats, with the lowest base strength in the game
Very poor stat growth, with less than 2 strength per level, and 2.5 agility per level.
Need, and I cannot stress this enough, NEEDS a ton of farm to be effective. If you're laning with Medusa I recommend you be an item independent Support hero.
Countered by heroes with Mana break or a diffusal blade, making Anti mage a pain in the *** to play against.

Summary

I'm not going to take the time to explain her skills, as there is a very up-to-date and precise wiki that is accessible here. My build can be put to use in any lane, though I would highly suggest taking the middle or safe lanes, because those spots will give you the safest places to farm. All the items in the build have a specific purpose. Items that give stats, have ultimate orbs, and health or mana regen are very helpful to Medusa, and will make her much more formidable in the late game. On top of that, attack speed items let Medusa flash farm with ease once she picks up her split shot, and will make her team fighting/ ultimate much more effective.

Early game

The early game you want to start of with tangos, three branches, and slippers. The branches will give you some last hitting and more health, just under 500, the slipper will give you a little boost in damage, and the tangos are self explanatory. If you intend on going to the mid lane with Medusa, I would recommend picking up another set of tangos, because it's better to play safe than sorry. If you're safelaning I would save that extra gold for your wraith band. If you go to the side lanes take a support with you, someone who won't take up much of your much needed farm. I have found that heroes like Crystal Maiden, Lina, and other strong harass heroes are great to help Medusa in lane. Where Medusa shines, in my opinion, in in the midlane against heroes like Pudge, Morphling, and other heroes that have to stand close to the creep wave to get last hits. These heroes are easily punished by Medusa's right clicks and the Mystic Snake. The punishment is dished out especially well when Medusa hits level 7, and her Mystic snake can hit a hero for 600 damage if it hits enough creeps and the hero last.

Once you get a bit of farm you want to get a wraith band and a magic wand. You already have the branches so farming these items take little time. the band will give you more last hitting damage and the wand uses up both the branches and gives you an extra little boost in your healing/mana regen potential. Next pick up a ring of the basilius to get the Ring of Aquila. Turn your ring OFF as to not push the lanes, because the extra armor the ring gives off is enough to throw off the lane equilibrium. Afterwards buy boots and a glove of haste. If you're good you can have all these items buy about 5-8 minutes.

Mid Game

Now is where you're going to have to play more defensively. Around now ganks will be inevitable, and you'll have to play more defensively. However, that doesn't mean you can give up farm. If you're in the mid lane try to get the creeps close to your tower and deny your own creeps as frequently as you can. getting farm is crucial, and you want to be able to farm up the Maelstrom, Treads, and Yasha by 15-18 minutes. Treads are the boots of choice for Medusa because tread switching will save you mana, get you health, and attack speed when they are needed. the Maelstrom will allow you to farm, push, and hopefully take a tower and maybe a kill or two in the mid game. The Yasha is crucial because it will build into a Manta later and gives you crucial move speed to be able to escape some ganks in the mid game and walk in front of your opponents for your ultimate. With the Yasha Treads and Maelstrom farming a Linkens should take very little time. ALWAYS GO THESE THREE ITEMS FIRST. Why? Because they cover you offensively and defensively pretty well. Keeping treads on strength will give you a good chunk of Hp, the Yasha will let you hit harder and run faster, and the Maelstrom will let your farm with ease and harass heroes pretty solidly. Linkens is more of a defensive item, and doesn't let you contribute to clashes early, these items will offer a bit of defense and a bit of offense alike.

Late game, and Medusa's time to shine

Around 25-30 minutes is when you should get your linkens, and you have about ten minutes more of farmign before you can REALLY contribute to teamfights. You can farm any of the late game items first and it's all up to your personal choice. I prefer farming up an Eye of Skadi as soon as I can, and here is why: Eye of Skadi gives Medusa EVERYTHING she needs. You're probably thinking, "But King, how can one item fit a hero so well?" Well let me tell you, One Eye of Skadi grants a total of 725 health, 0.75 health regeneration, 3.5 armor, 25 attack speed, 575 mana, 1 mana regeneration and 25 attack damage. On top of that, Skadi give you a 35% slow that you can fire at will towards enemy heroes. This give you the ability to chase, something you would have never been able to do before your Skadi. Once you get these items you will probably have sold your Ring and Wand and have your last slot left. The last slot if your slot to choose, and I would recommend one of the situational items. Depending on what the other team is built for is what you should build for, as well as how well you and your team is doing.

Does your team need a little extra armor and do you need attack speed? Get an AC.
Are you getting beaten to a bloody pulp and no one on the other team has gotten an MKB? Get a Butterfly.
Do you want to ball out of control with a ridiculous amount of damage? Divine Rapier is for you.
Do you want to sustain in fights more? Satanic is perfect for you.

No matter what you're looking for one of those items should cover you.

The forbidden items.

The Reason I have listed the basher, Crystalis, their upgrades, and the MKB to the never buy list is because of this: effects like bash and crit only affect the primary target of Medusa's, so split shot won't crit five creeps at once. Skadi is the only exception to my Orb choices because of all the extra stats it gives as well.

Outro

If you read this guide, Thanks! This is the first guide that I have written and I hope to write more in the future. Any Critical feedback would be lovely, I hope you guys go out and play Medusa and find out why she is such a fun, fascinating, and powerful hero.
