Dolan Lump's Guide to Offlane Monkey King

Introduction

Monkey King is one of the most exceptional heroes that can deal huge amounts of damage, initiate team fights, and is also a very slippery hero. Monkey King lacks survivability and is very squishy and so this my guide showing you my way on how to play Monkey King.

Items

Stout Shield - Basic defense during the early game

Tango - Basic Regen for the early game

Healing Salve - Basic Regen for the early game

Phase Boots - During the early - mid game, Monkey King needs speed to chase down his foes and the slow of his second skill in conjunction with phase boots will make things more easier

Ring of Aquila - Armor and Mana Regen will prove its worth in the early stages of the game

Echo Sabre - This will help Monkey King charge his third skill much easier and the slow that echo sabre provides is also very handy

Vanguard - The damage block this item provides can help Monkey King survive against heroes who depend too much on their physical attacks, supports who has very low based attacks, and this can help Monkey King tank the creep wave when farming. HP regen is also very helpful

Monkey King Bar - True Strike helps Monkey King fight carries who depends themselves with evasion. Purchase this early if you think your enemy carry is building a butterfly or your enemy has skills that provides evasion.

Desolator - Desolator provides high damage and armor reduction, if your enemies are soft or has high hp and low armor and doesn't depend on evasion, this is a great pick up to make things easier

Black King Bar - When enemies has too much lockdown, magic, or slows. Black King Bar can cover Monkey King for that.

Assault Cuirass - Assault Cuirass provides very high armor and an aura that adds armor to allies and reducs armor from the enemy. In conjunction with desolator's armor reduction and vanguard's damage block, Monkey King is likely to kill his foes much easier.

Abyssal Blade - Upgrade your Vanguard in to a abyssal blade to have bash on your normal attacks and cast a 1.4s stun to your fleeing enemies.

Boots of Travel - Change your phase boots in to BoTs so you can travel around the map much quicker but avoid getting outside the fog so you can catch your enemies by surprise

Satanic - Provides lifesteal for life threantening clashes

Skadi - Stats and slow can help Monkey King survive

Divine Rapier - Monkey King's first skill's damage multiplier can deal a huge amount of damage with Divine Rapier

Butterfly - This can either be a Luxury item nor a Situational item. If Monkey King's enemy carry depends only on auto attacks, you might want to consider getting this

Pipe of Insight - If your enemies has so much magic damage and your team mates doesn't want to buy pipe. You might as well provide you and your team pipe of insight to win more fights

Diffusal Blade - If your enemies depend so much on mana, buffs, or spells this is a very help item to have.

Shadow Blade - If you are not able to stay inside your ultimate, shadow blade can easily help you with that but beware of enemy detection. You may also upgrade this in to silver edge but I recommend to do it in the later stages of the game.

Pros / Cons

Pros

-Monkey King is a versatile hero who can play both carry or semi support
-Monkey King deals high amounts of damage
-Monkey King can trick enemies with mischief
-Turn into a banana

Cons

-Monkey King is very squishy
-Heroes with DoTs (ex. viper, venomancer, etc...) cancels his skill "tree dance" so it's better to stay away from them until an ally comes to help
-Orb of venom is a cheap and powerful item against Monkey King because of the DoT
-Heroes with tree cutting abilities (like timbersaw) are enemies you should be aware of

Team Work

Monkey King is an initiating hero who hides above the trees. The main purpose of Monkey King is to give vision for your allies and initiate from the shadows and deal huge amounts of damage to the enemy.

Ranked Play

During Ranked Play, you should consider picking Monkey King as 4th or Last pick since many heroes can easily counter him and destroy your team play.

Creeping / Jungling

Monkey King needs farm, I repeat, MONKEY KING NEEDS FARM! When you are trying to make an attempt of a gank but no one is in the lane, it is better to claim the creeps with caution and go back to the trees to have another shot of a gank. And in jungling, I prefer killing small-medium camps during the early game and proceed to the large camps when you have better items.

Tips

-Avoid ganking strong carries without allies
-Avoid making too much damage dealing items
-Monkey King is a soft and squishy hero, so build stats and defensive items
-Analyze your enemies' strategies and don't rush too much
-Use your mischief skill inside the fog and don't block the path because the enemy will get suspicious
-FARM!!!!
