Early game the only way to play Riki is to play defensively. You need to sit back and farm creeps as your main priority. You can out-last hit anyone in the game because of your back stab and his super fast attack animation. Your lane partner should be supporting you by harassing and giving you some breathing room.
The best way to play Riki is to maximize your opponents time spent in your cloud. Riki's cloud is his greatest asset and makes him very hard to kill and will force heroes to run from you allowing you to back stab them. Not only is it a great silence but it also makes normal attacks much less effective due to the increased miss chance.
The core items I have listed are the items I shoot for every time I play Rikimaru.
By building pure agility with dif. blade and brutalizer you have an extremely fast attack speed as well as mana reducing and bashing properties which not only allows for you to stun lock most enemies inside your cloud allows you to get off a massive amount of damage while you are behind your target. If you keep people in your cloud... You Will Win.
Average gank with Riki goes as follows:
1. Setup around target and decide which way he will run (most likely back to base)
2. Cloud with target with most of the cloud headed to where they will run.
3. Instantly Dif. Blade them.
4. Start attacking and they will run allowing you to hit them in the back without much effort.
5. Blink for the kill or to safety.
6. Dif. Blade yourself if you get dusted and are going to die.
Riki is best played as a strong carry and if played incorrectly (out of your cloud) can be easily killed due to the low amount of health.
REMEMBER: YOU CAN DIFFUSAL BLADE YOURSELF IF YOU GET DUSTED (LIFE SAVING)
