Big Momma's Back! (Beginner's Ganking Guide)

Introduction

Hello people! I've been lurking about DOTAFire for awhile, using the guides here to familiarize myself with all the heroes, and as a way of repaying the community at large, I've decided to write one of my own guides. This is a beginner's guide to Broodmother, an easy ganking/laning hero to get into - and as you can imagine, this build is a ganker/laner build.

Item Justification

STARTING
Broodmother starts off relatively squishy, so your starting items are there to beef her up a bit. Three branches give her a nice stat increase, and the Sage's Mask allows her to quickly regenerate her much-needed mana for her Q nukes/spiderlings. The tangos are there to negate the damage you take from your brief hit-and-runs; the enemy heroes on your lane will hate you so much that they'll be focusing all their energies on taking you down. Better believe it.

EARLY
You should quickly get the gold needed to get the Ring of Protection that allows you to turn your Sage's Mask into the Ring of Basilus. Following that, build your branches up into the ever-convenient Magic Wand. Broodmother will be in alot of engagements, so this is a sensible item, as it allows her to quickly stock up 15 charges, which can be very useful when she's fleeing from a gank and needs that extra mana to spin new web or fire off a last nuke at the equally low-health pursuer. Get Boots of Speed after that, then turn your Ring of Basilus into a Ring of Aquila. Following that, upgrade your Boots of Speed into Power Treads, focusing on strength - you'll need that extra health. Buy Morbid Mask, then choose to upgrade it into Vladimir's Offering immediately, or get your two Oblivion Staffs first.

MID
By now you should have either Vladimir's Offering or Orchid Malevolence, depending on how you choose to play. If you're ganking enemy heroes more often, you should definitely grab Orchid Malevolence for its silencing properties, good against fellow invisible heroes. However, if you're pushing for towers, getting Vladimir's Offering is not a bad idea, as it helps buff up your spiderlings alongside Ring of Aquila. Mithiril Hammer is there for the damage, and the later upgrade to BKB, which you'll need if the game wears on into the later phase. Hyperstone is to be upgraded into Assault Cuirass, and also allows you to take full advantage of your ulti by rapidly draining enemy health.

LATE
If the game has lasted this long, pray you did your job properly and killed the carry's farm. This will make your team's victory a breeze. Finish off your Assault Cuirass and BKB, and you can get right into the fray, spinning webs around sites of engagement, like towers and bases, and striking when they least expect it. Watch out for Gem of True Sight or Sentry Wards, as by this point the enemy is probably wise to your hit-and-run tactics, and you might have to go for a more heads-on approach; hence the heavy hitting final items.

The Broodmother

Broodmother is a terrifying opponent to lane against, due to her ability to strike and then vanish out of sight, similar to bounty hunter - except she's got a nuke AND a slow attack, that lets her seize early ganks easily.

Now the early web placement is very important. Many people make the mistake of just willy nilly putting them wherever's convenient. Note that webs should always be your first skill - and you'll get two to begin with. Set off for your lane early, and spew the first web. By the time the creeps arrive, you can setup your second web. Your first web should be reasonably close to the site of creep engagement, where you can deny and last hit freely, since you're invisible in the web's proximity. Regardless of whether you're top or bottom, your second priority should be to web the trees where the enemy team will hide in for ganks. Up top, this is below the first dire tower. In bottom, this is directly below the river's exit. This allows you to easily escape ganks, keep an eye on those areas for your laning partner (if you're babysitting a carry), and also secure your own ganks on unsuspecting heroes. While playing as broodmother, watch out for Sentry Wards. She is the most vulnerable hero to them, as her invisibility only activates in web proximity, which is visible to the enemy and stationary - and thus ideal for them to place a Sentry Ward. To counter this, just buy your own Sentry Wards and destroy theirs. You'll know when they have one in place when creeps start attacking you. Watch carefully for the signs or you'll end up as the victim of an early gank.

Your aim in the early game is to completely kill the farm of whichever enemy heroes are in your lane. Deny their kills. Whittle down their health. Make them panic as they try to lane against an unseen spider queen. Swap lanes to get to the enemy carry, wherever they are, and harass him until he leaves, then stalk him around the map relentlessly. Broodmother is equipped with best harassing skillset in the game. Go invisible in your web, wait till the enemy hero comes close, then strike them, slow them, and let your laning partner cause some damage before fading back into the web. You can use your Q as a nuke against enemy heroes, or to last hit creeps and grab some spiderlings in the process, then use the spiderlings to kill the other creeps, build them up in number, and then ... HIDE THEM! That's right. Your spiderlings should go invisible with you, and appear only to harass or kill enemy heroes at low health. When they're spammed en masse, spiderlings are quite the threat; paired with your passive E, which slows the enemy per hit, you should easily be able to secure a few early ganks.

Eventually, you'll drive out the heroes from your lane, and they'll start trying to counter-gank. At this point you should be flitting back and forth to wherever you're needed, or heading to isolated lanes when teamfights are going on and pushing down towers with your spammable spiderlings. Good luck!
