99.9% of Dota players never reach the level they need to be competitive, because that requires certain skills and mindsets way above the majority who treat Dota like a game. This means watching your replays, analysing them, making goals like 40cs in 6minutes, etc etc.

If you're serious about it, solo queue until you get into games with semi and pro players (ie if you're in NA with rtz, Fear, universe, people who pub a lot). Ask them about ixdl and how to get started; if you're good enough they'll help you out.
