Hey everyone, I'm new here, thought I'd do a quick intro...

Just started playing about a month ago. I played Aeon of Storms competitively for a year or two before I made the switch over to dota. For those of you unaware of what Aeon of Storms (AoS) is, which I'm assuming is most of you, it's a Moba game in the SC2 arcade.

So far I'm about 130 games in with a 50% win rate or so. I'm trying to learn as many heroes as possible, rather than specialize right away. I played alot of mid heroes in AoS, as well as some jungle and a few carries. In AoS, jungle is slightly different, you usually put your hard carry or at least a secondary carry in the jungle to farm up and roam gank.

I've been playing a decent amount of Lina because I find she's a good way to learn hero skills, timings, c/ds, etc. while avoiding failing. As a support/secondary initiation, I can wait for the teamfight to develop to be able to land my combo. My favorite hero, and my most successful so far is Brewmaster. I like that he can fulfill many roles, while always bringing some dominant teamfight/initiation to the table. I've also really liked viper and shadow shaman. Viper, because he's an easy, tanky carry that can lane well and shadow shaman because his disable is really fun.

If anyone has any advice or resources for learning the game faster, it would be much appreciated!

First of all, welcome, and enjoy your stay! I am sure that everyone here will be able to help you out one way or another. If you would like to further read up on the mechanics of the game, I suggest Purge's guide:

Also, I have moved the thread over to New Player Help.

Well, having MOBA experience should help you learn DOTA faster. 8{)

I'd recommend sticking to just a few right now, there are a lot of different aspects to learn in DOTA, e.g. Last Hitting and Denying, managing your Mana, Map Awareness, which Items to buy and when, etc. It's easier to learn these once you've found a Hero you're comfortable with. Once you've gotten used to some of the basics, i.e. you start noticing when Heroes go missing, you've got a which Items are useful in certain circumstances, etc. then you should be ready to try new Heroes.

Trying to learn as many new Heroes as you can, while getting used to all the basics (even if you have some experience with some of them in other games) can easily overwhelm you. For example, players who struggle to Last Hit Creeps tend to Focus more on the Creeps to make up for the difficulty, often leading to them not noticing that Pudge that's heading their way! D{8

Having said that, sometimes it's better to ignore certain principles, so that you can focus on others, e.g. going with a pre-determined Item Build gives you one less thing to think about during the game. You need to learn to adapt your Items to suit each game, but if you're struggling to keep track of how many Heroes are missing from each Lane, you may want to focus your attention on avoiding getting Killed.

Still, it sounds like you've narrowed it down to a few Heroes that you love the most, so you should be fine eventually. 8{)

Pr0 Tip:-ALWAYS Carry a TP scroll after about 10 minutes, make sure that if you use one, you get another one in the next 60 seconds...unless you have Boots of Travel ;{)

Another guide to help out if you need it;
http://www.dotafire.com/dota-2/guide/learning-the-ropes-a-beginners-guide-to-dota-8
Also Xyrus said to stick to a couple of heroes when you start out and you should. Try to avoid hard carries or heroes that you need a good team with such as Phantom Lancer or Io
Your new diet for heroes; You will need 4 wards (cuz wards taste better), 1 set of tangoes, 1 mango, 1 cheese.
With this you can make a nice Tango Mango Cheese platter. You can wash this all down with a nice bottle of water, Can be flavoured with red, green, yellow, blue, purple AND GOLD!
Caution: Taking roshan 3 times is required.

Play Viper, allows you to focus on basic dota principles because all you really do is walk around and right click people. Also magic resistance offers survivability for new dota players
Do as I say, not what I do

Some beginner tips.

Avoid the Noob heroes: Sniper Riki

Every decent players know how to counter them. They also teach you bad habits that will hurt you in the long run.

Avoid the skill shot heroes: Pudge Mirana

You should practice with bots for a long while before adding these heroes to your rotation. Due to their skill shot being their best selling point.

Avoid the high ceiling heroes: Invoker Meepo

Even the pros have trouble making the most out of them. The easiest way to gimp your team when your just starting is to pick them. Unless you do the following:

Practice practice practice:

Only way you'll improve is by doing. Practicing with bots is the best way to learn a heroes play style. You should start on medium and test your play skill on hard.

Extra info:

Watch the pros play. They are amazing at trying out different strategies and combos.

Example: Watched a match that had Arteezy as Ember Spirit He used his ult to make three remnants right into the middle of the team fight. He then ported to one and caused all three to do damage. Then he went into the normal ES combo of fist + chains.
