Hello,
So I know some of you may be completely new to Dota 2 when it comes out having not played the first Dota and not knowing much about the new one. I will be more than happy to offer in game assistance for any who require it and yeah I know the game or the beta are not out yet so this post is a bit ahead of time but the sooner you get learning the better :). I'm pretty sure that Dota 2 is going to be released on Steam so feel free to add me on Steam if you want to. My Steam username is ManBearPig_93 and I will be more than willing to share my 6 years of Dota experience with any of you. Also if any of you want to start learning beforehand in Dota or LoL just send me a message and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Yours Sincerely,
Kelvin

Yeah that's a really good question in the sense that items are probably the most confusing aspect of Dota and it can be overwhelming for new players in most cases. The key for learning how to use items is through trial and error such as having a game where you only get damage items with sniper to deal high damage and then in another game you change it up and get some lifesteal items instead to allow you to win 1v1 fights. The other thing you could try doing is looking up builds on sites such as this and they would identify which items you get for what heroes and good solid definitions on why these items are suitable for that hero. You could give me a hero and I could give you a few items that would be suitable for that hero but the thing is you have to be playing a certain hero for some time before you perfect what items to get for that hero. I'm a good example because I have been playing dota for like 5 years but then started to play League of Legends and had no clue as to what item to get for what hero and I went on the League of Legends builds site and looked up builds and followed them and what I found was that when I bought the items according to what the build told me I got the know the items much better and started buying the items which I preferred instead of blindly following a build. I would suggest not giving up on Dota because of the variety and complication of the items because once you are over the starting stages it just comes as second nature. Just look up some builds and follow them at first and you will realize you get more familiar with the items and eventually get more comfortable with them and change up the builds to your own liking. Hope that helped and just let me know if it wasn't what you were looking for. Still kinda knew to giving advice :)

Lion, for one, is very easy. He has loads of CC and works somewhat like a support, with some good burst. Really, it's just about landing your spells on the right targets so your team can rip them to shreds.

Another mentionable one on the list would be Earthshaker. His key spell, Fissure, can make or break a teamfight. Just get the positioning on that right and your team will love you. He works as a tanky dps but also has a lot of power in his supportive skills. By using fissure you can split their team in half and can turn a 5v5 into a 2v5, after fissure is down you pick off the rest. Just try not to put one of YOUR teammates on the otherside of the wall with 5 of the enemy, you will get some anger thrown at you surely then.

Lastly, from the given database, is Tiny. He is a bit weak early on, late game he becomes a behemoth with great AoE damage and stun, as well you are great at skirmishes. You can get in the faces of the smaller enemies and they can do little to stop you as you stun n' pound them to oblivion.

Some others that I don't feel like writing a short paragraph for: Sniper, Sand King, Slardar, Axe.

Avoid: Pudge, Vengeful Spirit, Shadow Fiend, and Zeus until you are comfortable with the game.

Yeah, I'm a LoL vet who played a bit of DotA. I'm kind of getting sick of LoL's simplistic character design, and even sicker of the community. After Riven/Xerath/Graves, I really am starting to get a bit worn thin... I mean, how many short-medium ranged cone AoE's does one game need? (Looking at you, Graves!)

The heroes in DotA were always very interesting to me, to the point where I actively avoided HoN due to it copying what I saw as rather excellent character design. I'm especially excited for Admiral Proudmoore / Kunkka and Sven. Sven seems a lot like the basic Tryndamere/Yi melee champion in LoL, but for some reason, that seems alright in DotA2.

In any case, I'd love some advice as to what to build and who to play. I think Sven would be pretty easy to pick up... His abilities are rather cut and dry. AoE stun, check. Passive cleave, check. AoE speed buff a'la Gangplank, check. Melee bolstering buff, check. Pretty simple, if you ask me.

Kunkka seems a bit like Cho'Gath, but only with his ability to hit multiple minions with magic damage and his Q, what with its knock-up after a few seconds. What really promises to mix it up is his X-marks-the-spot ability, or whatever it's called. I'm going to love marking people and watching my allies set up timed AoE's right on top of the X.

Sven is one of my favorite hero's for the same reason you want to try it. He is simple. He was the first hero I 'mastered' when I started and I still love playing him.

For a new player a bit of advice I can give is just play the game. Don't sit watching youtube videos of pro players and what not. Practice makes perfect. As for builds, like said above a lot of what it takes to get a good build is trail and error. Most heroes are straight forward. Tanks = Strength Items - Agility = Agility/Damage items. Common sense really, but if you are like me and would rather jump into a new game with some bit of knowledge I'd advise you to google 'Sven Build' or whatever character you wish to play. Not only do the guides express said heroes build they explain what a perfect game should look like - what your abilities really do - give you the key details of your character. It's basically one of those 'Heroes for Dummies Books', but to help you learn from the ground up. That's what I did and it sure helped a lot.

For characters to play, again just play the game and see who you like and try it. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. For me I started with Strength because most of the time their harder to kill which is helpful for someone who is learning their hero (Or Dota type games in general)

Hope this helped.

Easiest DOTA hero for me would be Skeleton King. Single target stun(subsequently slowing), two passive(crit and Lifesteal aura) and his ultimate is basically a second life(revive at full HP/MP).

Lol I wouldn't recommend anyone new to the game playing Earthshaker. His fissure takes more than a few games to master, that stun would either get you a kill, or deprive you off one(by separating the hero from the gank on the other side). Having said that though, ES is extremely fun hero! Get a Phase boot (and Bottle... or substitute phase for Arcane boot, for that much needed mana boost), and your core item Kelen Dagger(very much like Flash in LoL, but with lower cooldown, and is disabled if attacked by enemies) then you pretty much controls teamfight with your ulti. Best initiator ever.
