It's hard for me to fully explain the reasons behind wards in a forum, but i will try my best. Wards are not so simple as most have described in this thread. However, there are some common ward spot that most player have become to familiarize themselves with. For example, one in the river and one in the jungle(Spot depends on radiant or dire). I think that is the most common starting wards. Another one is one Top and one bot part of the river. Personally, i don't like these kind of wards because it sets up for easy ganks in either lanes(bot or top). Only mid is protected. But that is fine if you are trying to protect mid as he will become your carry later on(assuming he doesn't feed). The best way i can describe warding is put wards in area so your team doesn't get ganked. After you play for a while, you will know where the enemy tend to go when they want to gank your team. If they have a Junglers like ursa, Lycan, Lifestealer and etc. You must always have a ward up on the bottom part of the river to keep an eye out on roshan. Those heroes can easily solo roshan and really hurt your team. You can counter these junglers by putting up wards in their jungle to prevent creeps from spawning. Although, that is not usually a problem in pub matches, but it is still good to know. I hope you learned a lot. If you still confused or not sure what to do still. For now, just try taking some of the simpler suggestions and when you get comfortable, start thinking "What do we need vision of?". Place Observer Wards near Towers when youwant to Push them, place Observer Wards near Roshan when either Team is likely to try to take him, and use Sentry Wards to get rid of their Roshan Wards, etc.

After you start getting De-warded, think about where else you can get adequate vision of the same area, but without letting the other Team find your Wards this time.

It takes a while to develop a sense for these things, but it comes.

My best suggestions are:
1. Ward rune spots for the first 14 minutes
2. Mid game wards are often placed in lane. This includes "behind-tower wards", jungle wards and hill wards(e.g. mid lane river ward)
3. Jungle wards are awesome. If you have balanar, barathrum or Furion you can place wards ALL over their jungles.
4. Remember sweet spots such as the “magic bushes”, "sexy rocks(Peppo-oPaccio)" and dire tier 1 mid tower foundation(or slightly north to that, near the juke spots).
5. Do not, I repeat, do not ward on the cliffs with eye graffiti . Most supports will de-ward them. Try to ward on some tricky spots! These include dire secret shop, radiance jungle cliff(slightly north to the large creep camp), "cross-road"(jungle)and lastly, the ward that is north-east of dire small camp.The last one is good for blocking the camp and giving small vision to potential ganks(don't recommend newcomers).
6. Who says you have to ward on certain spots? Ward where you think your enemy is going to appear before team fight starts!
