I would say strenght. they have more HP points (life), hence they survive more easily, whereas the other classes are way more squishy, and difficult for a new person to learn them. Also the role they are meant to play is more about surviving than everything else, and usually they don't have that much active spells, so overall they're better for you to begin with.

A good hero to begin your training is Dragon Knight which, if I'm not mistaken, is in the "training" phases you can play when you begin the game.

For beginning I'd tell you to just read this up,
you'll find the thing you're asking for in the "hero selection" part
However, since you're new you'd do well on reading the whole thing, good luck! :D

P.S: This should go into new player help part of the forum

What Yzreel gave you is an awesome guide from an ex pro player, but be careful with one thing: don't mistake classe (the three you mentioned) with hero role, which is the way Purge divided the heroes in his guide.

It goes roughly like this:

- Class: Determines the characteristics of your hero. There are three of them.
  • Strenght = The hero has more HP points and more HP regen. Ex: Dragon Knight
  • Inteligence = The hero has more mana points and more mana regen Ex: Crystal Maiden
  • Agility = The hero has more armor and attack speed. Ex: Sniper

- Type: You can either hit from a distance or from near the target:
  • Ranged = You attack from a big distance, as if you're using a bow. Ex: Sniper
  • Melee = You attack from near the target, as if you're using a spear. Ex: Dragon Knight

- Role: Based on the characteristics of your hero, it is meant to perform in one of the following roles. There are more roles and in-betweens, but you should begin considering only this three.
  • Carry = Usually an Agility hero, it's the hero that's supposed to cause the most damage to the enemy team, aka kill them all. Why? Because he has the attack speed, the armor and the damage. In order to do that, he needs more gold and XP than the other heroes, which roles is to help him get them. Ex: Sniper
  • Support = Usually an Inteligence hero, it's the one who's supposed to help the carry get that gold and XP, and also help the team in general. Why? Because his spells are meant to defend and help. He can do this by buying support items (such as the Animal Courier and Observer Wards), and by using his spells to heal friends and stun enemies. Ex: Crystal Maiden
  • Tank = Usually a Strenght hero, his role is to be in the center of teamfights, so that the other team uses all its damage on him (like a big fat distraction) while the support is left alone to do his spells and the carry is left alone to do his damage without being focused down. Why? Because he can survive longer. To do so he builds items that grant him more survivibility, like items that grant HP points and armor. Ex: Dragon Knight (although at the moment people consider him more of a carry, but that doesn't really matter to you at this stage).

I used always the same heroes as an example so you see how it is all connected, and these three heroes are some of the best for you to get to know the mechanics of the game.

I think this covers the basics for now. If you want to try these three heroes I mentioned, I can explain to you why they are a good way of getting in dota.

Lich.

1. In lane, stand so you can see the creeps meet.
2. Use Sacrifice whenever you can.
3. If you see 3 or more enemy heroes clumped together, use your ult.
4. Follow your team around.
5. Right-click Frost Armour to autocast it.

Use a steam guide to determine which items to buy and which skills to skill.

My first hero is actually Crystal Maiden, but she's hard to master as support role (but easy to understand). So I changed to Jakiro which I found very good as starter, IMO. Not really hard to understand, but need a little bit more time to master.

Jakiro have a great harass skill in laning phase to support your carry to farm (Liquid Fire, NO NEED MANA TO USE IT!!), team fights (Dual Breath and Ice Path, although Ice Path is the hardest skill to master), and great ulti if your enemy stay longer in AoE.

In late game, Jakiro have good HP pool compare to other support.

But, I wouldn't suggest to play Jakiro for the first time play Dota 2. At least, learn how his skill works (especially Ice Path).

Lich would be nice for first time play as support, and Sniper for carry.

(sorry for my bad English)

Lich is indeed a simple hero but I don't agree that he is one of the best to begin with, nor that he doesn't take long to master. I think beggining with a hero with some kind of strong disable is very helpful, because heroes that doesn't have it tend to pay for it in other ways, and in Lich's case is the fact that he has an unreliable but very powerful ultimate and skills that are somehow subtle - the slow is not the biggest, nor has that much damage, and the plus armor isn't also that much. That is, unless you do know how to play him very well. If you don't, I think you end up being of little use to your team - ok, perhaps you won't die as much, but what about your contribution? And he is one of the heroes that I see more frequently being bad played, and this could be the reason. Picking a hero with subtle skills is not a good way to start.

Crystal Maiden, on the other hand, has Frostbite, which is very powerfull in all stages of learning. Also with the fact that she is indeed so squishy you learn to die less and to position yourself better. After CM, any other hero will be easier to get into.

Jakiro is better in that regard also, IMO, because of his disables/more reliable damage and a straight forward role.

Another thing I think a new player must consider is to play heroes with Auras and Passives to start with, because that's less clicking to go around (the same goes for items, if you are new there's no use in picking Keeper of the Light and a lot of active items, you won't be able to use it all properly yet).

You're right, nice tip! Lion is also a very good starting hero, in some aspects better than Crystal Maiden and Jakiro. I had forgot him :)
