Hey guys,

I have been playing LoL for about 4 years and i just grew tired of it. I am making the switch to Dota and i like to think i have decent moba skills down, positioning, farming, etc. But the one thing i am totally clueless on in this game is what the hell do i build for champs, I was wondering if you guys have a group on steam or anything where you all post when you are looking to play or if there are groups of you that just play casually etc.

PS my steam name is the same as this acct name and i play on the NA East servers.

Welcome to dotafire :)
In fact there is a steam group for DotaFire, its name is DotaFire.
Or you could check the guides and / or visit the forums once in a while
Im sure you could learn something new :)

P.S: when playing, remember to keep a cool head and always cooperate :D

Ok, unlike lol, dota has a very flexible item build. Items are bought to counter enemy heroes, buff your strengths, you can see a myriad of builds. On thus site most of the hero guides have their own preferred item builds. What is in common among builds are usually what benefits the hero the most. However, there can still be adjustments according to your preference. For example, shadow fiend. Some people like to teamfight using him, and build crits, skadi, bkb and items that make them figgt better. Others like to push and rat down buildings, so they get boots of travel fast and get a desolator.

Item builds are dependant on your playstyle and what is needed in a game, therefore you should not follow a item build completely by the book. If you want to refer, guides are a good place to start, this site and the steam community are good places to find good guides.

because different builds requires different playstyles in different scenarios, what i suggest is that find a hero or "champ" as you call it that suits your style (this could be a problem since there are more than 100 heroes on the pool), you could try this agianst bots first before doing it online to avoid bieng flamed, after you found your hero. browse between different builds, pick the one you are most comfortable with. after that go play online. after you get a hang of things, you could try different heroes a experiment with thier play style and what role they are supposed to play.

Edit: if you dont want to play agianst bots first, go make a party with someone in the forums in the matchmaking section, you could also make a thread in there so that people will actually know what you want and not expect things from you.

So, for item builds, remember that different items come with different styles. The same hero(you will probably get flamed for saying champs) can have multiple builds with drastic changes in performance and function.
Here's a very short and incomplete list of what you need to know
1. Have a Town Portal Scroll. It allows you to teleport to towers and possibly turn a fight around. It has a 60s cd so use it wisely.
2. Don't tell people you are drom league. Some of the community is hyper-toxic and will flame you.(Not here though)
3. Read up! Look for up to date extensive guides to a bunch of different heroes. I recommend guides made by Sando, Safecyn, and GooGaming. They write some very high-quality guides with detailed instructions.
4. Buy Dust of Appearance! Many low-level pubstompers rely on invisibility to escape situations they should not be able to. Dust them, and they will be unable to invis and slowed so that you can get the kill on that fed Riki.
5. Improvise! Guides can't cover everything. For now, as you are new to the game, stick to guides. Once you get ~100 hours in the game, you will be able to recognize what items you need to deal with a situation. Remember that you don't have to follow a guide. Go with your gut!(When you have some experience)
6. Play some Rubick when you feel you have items down. This is how I learned to play dota. You might not do well for a few games, but playing Rubick makes you learn so much you'll be ready to play any hero you want to.

When you're more familiar with DotA, I would recommend trying out Storm Spirit.

But for now, I think you'll like Axe. His abilities are the closest to Darius' out of any hero.

He's also the closest thing to a tank in DotA.
