I have been playing Dota for a little while now and I get the basics. I have been trying to try out items that aren't in the default item builds. I was wondering if the added damage bonus from Juggernaut's Blade Dance would be added to a cleave from Battlefury?
Also another noob question, why are the items you buy so dependent on the hero? I never see anyone pick up a farming item like Mjollnir. I hear people really criticize others over not sticking to traditional item builds. Why is it wrong to pick up an item like Battlefury on any hero as long as it has a decent damage output?

Because you need to have an item build that fits the strengths and weaknesses of each individual hero. Juggernaut, for example, has a lot of attack speed (1.4 base attack time), a lot of damage and an awesome ultimate...however he has no disable, he's slow, and he gets kited a lot. That's why you build items that increase movement speed on him as well as allow you to disable enemies so that you can actually attack them without them running away.

Because Battle Fury is a farming item. Except on extremely rare heroes, the only thing you get from battlefury is the ability to kill groups of creeps faster. Some heroes like Anti-Mage or Alchemist can use this farming ability to make tons of money very quickly, while for example a hero like Juggernaut will benefit far less from it.
Battlefury is a terrible damage item in comparison to real damage items like Desolator, Daedalus, Monkey King Bar... Bfury is only good at killing creeps, and at countering illusion heroes.
Welcome! One of the best things about Dota, in my opinion, is the insane amounts of variations, combinations and strategies connected to all the heroes, items and abilities that exists. Literally no game is completely the same, so items, builds and strategies have to be customized (more of less) to be optimal for each (many can be good, but the margins are small). And no hero has a set build that is "the best", so there you're always required to use your brain to win. Very important, do not play with your brain off, like many seem to do ;)
So, to you as a new player, here's a general tip: Think about this stuff, a lot!
Think about which items fit which heroes in which situations, roles and games. There are a million combinations, and being able to figure out the good ones quickly in a match is vital. Use dotabuff, dota build creator, dota calculator and of course Dotafire to investigate and learn.
When you lie in bed at night, maybe wonder: Is Mealstorm really worth it on Windranger (like everyone got before) or should you rush Agh's (like everyone does now!)? Or: How would Mask of Madness work on Juggernaut? AMAZING, it turns out! (And what does most damage in a teamfight, Jugger with Agh's or Jugger with Battlefury?) What about Mask of Madness on the squishy little Sniper?
The best thing about Dota is thinking about, checking out, trying out and figuring out this stuff ;)
By the way, if you're new to Dota, you're probably not playing with anyone great. So think for yourself and research the better players and meta-trends.
