Lore:
Quartanis was a magician, committed to living a solitary life underground. For many years people come and go, but Quartanis lived on, sustained by the gentle radiation emanated by towering mineral structures. Quartanis had committed to intensive training to become a magus, and he vowed that he would do so in a place without worries, completely void of distractions. As he lived underground, he found that he had a special affinity for the crystals found in endless caverns underground. Realizing that there were forms of magic that were yet to be discovered, he spent years mastering this new form of sorcery. After much trial and error (and a few centuries), Quartanis had mastered the Crystalline Arts. Quartanis headed to the surface, overjoyed by his discoveries and eager to share it.
Expecting to be greeted by the warm rays of the sun, he instead entered a dark, gloomy world, filled with misery and suffering. The world has changed, he thought. Choking on poisonous smog, he walked ahead, only to discover that he was surrounded by monsters, creatures he had never seen before. The creatures bared their teeth, threatening to seize him and consume his flesh at any moment. Summoning the crystals from underground, he punctured the flesh of the creatures, leaving none alive. As the creatures fell one by one, Quartanis swore to vanquish the evils of the surface world. This would mean that he might not be able to return to the peaceful underground, but then again, he thought, it would be a great demonstration of his abilities.
