Kuala Lumpur Major announced!

Kuala Lumpur will finally have its big Dota 2 moment, as the Dota Pro Circuit will be taking its first Major stop here in mid-November. Held by PGL with China’s ImbaTV and Malaysian TV channel Egg Network, the Malaysian event will have a $1 million prize pool and three days of public playoff matches in Axiata Arena.

The event runs November 9 to 18, with group stakes taking place on the 9th and 10th and playoffs following thereafter. The public portion of the event runs from November 16th to the 18th — and if you want to attend, tickets go on sale September 17.

All participants will take some of the prize, with the winner earning $350,000, all the way down to the 13th to 16th places taking $10,000. From the looks of the prize pool distribution, which has individual prizes up to fourth place, it’ll be a double-elimination event.

With the event running on the new Dota Pro Circuit system, there will be certain deadlines and rules imposed for registration and qualification:


1. Teams must lock in their rosters by September 15 at 10:00 AM PT (1 PM ET).

2. The qualifiers for the Majors take place September 16-21 online and will fill the majority of the Major’s slots.

3. Immediately after, the Minor qualifiers and the Minor main event will take place. Qualified Major may NOT participate in these.

4. The Minor’s winner will earn a spot at the Major.

There are no direct invites to this Major.

No official confirmation on when the Minor nor its qualifiers will take place yet.

Update on the major!

PGL revealed today the qualifiers slots distribution for their upcoming Dota 2 Major, which is also the first one featured in the 2018-2019 Dota Pro Circuit season.

According to the new Valve rules for the next Pro Circuit, none of the Minors and Majors will have directly invited teams with one exception: The Minor winner will automatically qualify for the Major following it. It is also stated in the rules that for an event to be eligible for a Major status, among other conditions, it must have a 16 team line-up.

The Kuala Lumpur Major is the first one on the schedule and the qualifiers for it will commence with the open brackets in just a couple of days, on the 10th of September, followed from September 16 to the 21st with the closed regional qualifiers.

Despite being hosted in South East Asia, the region didn’t receive an extra qualifier slot for this tournament. Instead, China, North America, and Europe are the regions who have been granted three slots, while the rest of the regions have two slots.

Kuala Lumpur Major Qualifiers slots distribution:
3 slots: China, North America, Europe
2 slots: SEA, South America, CIS
1 slot: Minor winner

Based on the fact that each region has two separate legs of open qualifiers, we assume that two teams will make it into the closed regionals, but there is no official information as of yet about how many teams will be receiving an invite to the closed qualifiers and the format used for the qualifiers is also unknown.
