The Plague Doctor

"Nothing personal. Just research."

Description

Plague Doctor is an Intelligence hero whose main abilities revolve around the idea of transferring something from one person to another. He can harm enemies with Extract to heal allies with Transfuse. He can remove debuffs from his team with Filter and return them to the opposition with Discharge. Essence Potion can be a great steroid or nerf hammer depending on which is more important. While the kit is definitely specialized to be a support, he can be quite versatile in how he approaches fights thanks to Contagion. More details will be delved into later.

Discussion

  • The combination of Extract and Transfuse is like a Brain Sap where you can choose to direct the healing to allies instead. It's his basic bread and butter contributions in fights. The combination of Filter and Discharge that brings the unique ability to essentially reflect debuffs and disables, although Spell Steal can already accomplish this somewhat. The added movement speed bonus for allies and movement speed slow for enemies ensures both abilities are useful even outside of good dispelling. Discharge is his only innate disable, thus casting it early for just the slow can reduce your ability to really turn around fights. Q and W revolve around a recast mechanic, so you can either immediately reactivate them for quick effect or wait until they are most needed. Since their original version's cooldown ticks down while the secondary versions are available, you don't need to worry about holding the second cast.

  • Essence Potion has flexible uses based on the primary attribute and allegiance of who you target. For Strength heroes, allies become much more durable like Heavenly Grace while enemies become easier to kill like Decay. For Agility, allied carries would love the stats while enemy carries would not. It's not as impactful on Intelligence heroes though, but a sudden mana boost or reduction can be important. To account for this when casting it on himself, all his attributes are improved instead albeit at a lower duration. Think of this as him hulking out to duel others sufficiently despite being a support. Since it also has a percentage-based change, this scales well against enemies similar to Reactive Armor and can synergize with certain items that allies purchase. As with how attributes work, affecting allies always increases their attack damage and the opposite is true for enemies, so there's that to keep in mind.

  • Contagion is really just Ogre Magi's ultimate and Skywrath Mage's scepter upgrade. While it lacks in uniqueness, I believe it makes up for in terms of how it relates to the rest of his abilities. Where the original inspirations just multiply your power without having any meaningful interactions, this is different because it only affects one ability at a time so you have to choose well. You can enhance Extract to damage 2 enemies as well as burst heal 1 ally, or you can enhance just Transfuse to overall protect more allies. You can enhance Filter to not just dispel more allies but to also potentially get even more things to reflect, or you can just enhance Discharge to debuff another enemy which could be crucial. These combos reach an interesting power spike at level 3 of the ultimate. With its cooldown finally becoming shorter than the recast times for Q and W, patient usage can allow you to empower both portions of one ability. For the sake of simplicity, Essence Potion is the exception and just randomly hits others for nice overall benefits. But it can spread to allies or enemies, it does add some fun pandemonium.
