Kain is a hero built to be a carry. His abilities grant him early game advantage with their powerful damage while still being able to scale lategame because of their added effects. But he can also easily change his playstyle to accommodate a vast range of roles and fit in any laning situation. He can easily devastate solo enemies allowing him to flourish mid or the enemy's off lane while still being able to hold his own against multi hero lanes and is extremely welcome on any aggressive tri-lanes.
Life Shaver is good at initiating combat since it deals more damage against targets with higher remaining health but it can also be used to counter enemies with strong regeneration or teams that are highly reliant on sustain abilities because of its health indexing effects. Dark Harvest deals heavy damage against lone heroes but has that damage split evenly if multiple heroes are struck, in exchange for this, Kain gains massive amounts of attack speed from striking multiple heroes at once. His passive, Unholy Fervor, grants him a constant damage boost as the game progresses, especially when used in conjunction with Dark Harvest. Lastly, Sins of the Past grants Kain with some additional dps as well as an ability to scout and a somewhat reliable positioning and escape mechanism.

After humanity was cast from the garden of life, those that survived tried their hardest to regain the favor of the Omniscience. They struggled in their new and unforgiving world and made sacrifices to appease the wrath of their god. There were those that regained the god's approval and were rewarded with a bountiful life, but there were also those whose pleas and offerings were ignored. Kain was of the latter, he grew envious as his brother gained more and more through the provenance granted by their god, while his prayers seem only to fall on deaf ears.
One day, in a fit of rage, Kain struck down his brother, spilling his blood into the earth. He grew terrified of what he had done, fearing the wrath of their god to fall on his head for retribution. With this, he ran. Into the darkened forests he hid, into the underbrush and inside a cave. He waited for what seemed like an eternity for judgement to come. But it did not come...
Inside the cave he heard the sound of dripping water. No light came from the outside, but he somehow could see clearly. He looked down at and saw his brother's blood still staining his hands. Horrified, he ran towards the sound of water and dipped his hand to wash the blood away. As his hands touched the water, he felt a deep and unsettling cold wash over him. He dipped his hands in further. It was then that he heard it. A voice that was not his own, but seemed to come from deep inside him. He felt an otherworldly terror as it repeated what it said...
