Playstyle and Advices

Charon, the Ferryman of Souls is an strong intelligence caster who can be an ethernal thread to his enemies, thanks to his pseudoglobal presence and extremely high damage output, but he suffers from low health, almost no disables and extreme reliance on levels to be effective. He is an strong midlaner, but can be also played as a lane or roaming support.
Baleful Light is his spammable, antitank spell, as it takes hige chunks of the enemy's current HP, but also damages their nearby allies, so, is better to cast this ability on tanky heroes in order to deal even more damage to their surrounding allies. Due to the extremely high manacost and percentage based damage of this spell, is better to max it last.
Soultide is a great attack buff that not only increases by a lot his damage, but also reduces movement speed of attacked enemies, making it an effective ganking tool. Because it gets more attacks as more enemies are nearby, is better to use this when there are many creepwaves accumulated and the enemies had already spawned their summon units or illusions. With proper management, Soultide can potentially have 0 downtime.
Spectral Boat allows Charon to rapidly move around the map, scape from enemies, scout areas or prepare ganks. If going to explore unwarded areas, is better to do it while in the spectral boat, as even if you find enemies, they can do nothing to you. At max level this has negative downtime, meaning that with enough mana regeneration you can permanently be in the boat and thus, making you very hard to gank.
Death Sentence has global range and can potentially ensure someone's death, because of the extremely high damage amplification, so, having good team comunication and map awareness is key to play Charon efficiently. Be careful when casting this, as if the target doesn't die when the time runs out, all amplified damage will be recovered. However, comboing with AA can solve this problem because Ice Blast completely negates that healing, and both having ways to amplify their damage output, this combo is definitely wirth trying.

Itemization

*Starting Items
-Null Tallisman or Wraith Ban give Charon the stats he just need to ensure lasthits and survive in the mid lane. Also Wraith Band can be built into Aquila.
-Fairy Fires and Tangoes can help him to endure in the lane.
-Branches can always be useful and built into Wand later on.
-Wards and Courier if going the support way.
*Early Game
-Arcane Boots or Power Treads, both are good for Charon, depending of going for a full caster or a more right clicking oriented build.
-Ring of Aquila Gives him good damage, good stats and mana regen to sustain his abilities.
-Veil of Discord is a core item that in most cases must be rushed since early on, either on caster or attack build, as Soultide deals magical damage, and combined with Death Sentence, no enemy will be able to endure your high damage output.
*Mid Game
-Maelstrom accelerates your farm incredibly, and your high mobility around the map helps you to get the most of it. Specially useful if your early game didn't gone as well as expected.
-Rod of Atos gives a nice disable to your entirely damaging skillset, also the stats are just what Charon needs once the enemy team starts dealing more damage.
-Force Staff is useful in both builds because of Charon's lack of scape once an enemy of over him. It can also be built into Hurricane Pike which is a good adition to his attack damage build.
-Orchid Malevolence makes you an inescapable, hard hitting ganker that can just rotate in lanes/jungle and solokill almost anyone.
*Situational Items
-Kaya if snowballing and wanting to kill enemies even faster.
-Glimmer cape can be situationally good, mostly on the caster build, or to endure strong enemy nukes.
-Urn of Shadows into Spirit vessel if ganking a lot and wanting to have even more presence. Also healling your allies or yourself between ganks may help a lot.
-Scythe of Vyse when getting into the late game. The disable is a nice adition to your set, and the stats are apreciated by both builds.
-Nullifier to keep farmed enemy cores down for even longer, and completely negate their potential.
-Guardian Greaves is a good mid/late game for the support build, due to Charon's global presence and participation in fights.
-Bloodthorn if going into ultra late game, make your already good damage even more harmful.
