Intro to Meepo

Hey guys, I thought I'd start off by first introducing who I am. I go by MeFTW and I have to say, Meepo is by far my favorite hero in DoTA 2! This will also be my first ever guide for DoTA 2 (So I apologize if it's actually bad or confusing ^^;)! Now I wouldn't consider myself pro or anything with him or any kind of progamer, however I am at about 120 - 57 W/L with him if that really counts for anything. Also, this guide isn't for newer Meepo players. If this is your first time playing as Meepo or you're just learning about him, I would not recommend this guide. I guess you could say that my intention of writing this guide is to perhaps open doors and experimental opportunities for players who already know how to play Meepo in their own way and hopefully this will up their game a little. The guide I'm about to write up for you all is more so for a more experienced Meepo player assuming that you have all the basics down for him and you know somewhat more or less how to micro the hero. This guide for the most part is just an alternative style and basically an outtake on how I, myself, play Meepo and it's more or less exactly what I do in my matches.

To elaborate, I'm a split pusher style of Meepo. My style relies a lot on farming almost nonstop, pushing lanes nonstop, ganking when the situation calls for it, and for the most part avoiding a good amount of the team fights only so that you can focus on pushing towers and keep the enemy team at the edge of their seats. Let's say you're going for a Nature's Prophet type of style except I find Meepo to do this job a lot more effectively ;) The build provided will keep you very squishy, but you will be insanely mobile and that early mobility you will have grants you the ability to farm so fast that you'll be reaching level 20 before others get to reach level 10. It's a wonderful feeling!

Okay! So lets get right to it!

Pros / Cons

Before choosing to play this style of Meepo you should consider the following

Pros:
Fun to play
A lot of multitasking!
Farms very fast
Levels fast
Amazing Ganker
Pushes lanes and takes down towers incredibly fast
Incredibly Mobility
You get commends for being good

Cons:
Hard to play
Requires a lot of micro
Requires a lot of APM
A lot of multitasking
You're very squishy early on
Easily countered
Is normally the main target
You must have a lot of map awareness!!
You get blamed for being bad

Skill order!

I won't go into toooooo much detail about what each ability does, if you're reading this type of guide you should already know each abilities function but I'll definitely go into depth about when and why I get these abilities in this order as well as how I use them.

Earthbind is the first skill I put a point on. Only because Meepo, being so squishy, needs to stay alive in the early game which is vital for your leveling. Earthbind in this case is your defensive ability. It allows you to get away from enemy heroes if they ever express some sort of aggression towards you. But not only is it a defensive ability, it's very good to have Earthbind early on because you can lock down enemy heroes in case someone comes over to gank. To me, Earthbind makes the most sense to get first. Some people might say Poof or Geostrike but with this build, it doesn't really flow that well and I'll explain why as I'm going through the skills.

POOF! I then put my second skill point into poof. Poof is great in the early game, it helps you get last hits especially if you've been having a hard time getting them. It is also pretty darn powerful in the early game. I only ever really spend mana Poofing only if I can last hit at least two creeps. I wouldn't waste it on a single creep I think better opportunities will arise so save your mana and just rely on last hitting with your regular attack. Furthermore, in this guide you want to max out poof as fast as possible whenever possible, this is the ability that allows you to farm so quick and it gives you so much mobility!

Divided We Stand. Definitely get this at level 3, some people save it for level 4.. I have no idea why, but having a second meepo so early in the game makes you so intimidating. It's also very good pyschologically wise because it automatically gives you space and room to farm your lane especially if you're going solo against another person. By having two meepos, your opponent is more likely to play safe. In addition, I also like to play sort of a sneaky tactic during this particular moment. When I hit level 3, I don't really put a point into Divided We Stand straight away. Reason being is because by doing this, I might cause my enemy to maybe think I put that point into something else rather than me actually saving it for a right moment. So if my enemy is dumb enough to get too confident and get in my face, what I'll do is right when he's in my face I'll put that point into my ult and surprise him with that second Meepo, net him down and try to take his life and if that doesn't work it'll cause for a pretty good surprise harrasment and hopefully cause damage psychologically too and he'll play more careful which in return provides you room to farm stress free. Having a second meepo allows you to stay in the lane without ever really leaving it because if any of your meepos get too hurt just run the hurt one back home to heal and poof him right back to lane.

After your first point into Divided We Stand it's definitely important to up Poof as much as you can just for maximum damage.

At level 6 you shouldn't be able to max out Poof just yet and therefore you'll have two other options, either another point into your net, Earthbind, or a new skill, Geostrike. I like to put this specific point into Geostrike. Reason being is because it adds so much to your lane. The extra following damage and the slow and lastly, that echoing geostrike sound is so satisfying ;). But really, I don't think a second point into Earthbind is really that useful in this point in time because the focus of what you should be doing is still trying to farm up gold rather than really trying to be going for ganks and what not. Our Earthbind right now is still used for defensive purposes and the occasional situational gank if that ever happens. Furthermore, having two meepos doesn't really seem to be all that effective having an extended ranged net however having two meepos with geostrike is much more useful.

=======================================================================================

Once you get one point into geostrike, you should be able to max out poof. The next thing I do is level Earthbind to level 3. The reason why I don't max out Earthbind straight away is because you don't really need that much netting or that long of a range for netting. You'll still only have 2 Meepos, so your ganking potential and your ability to last hit an enemy hero is still pretty difficult. By then you'll reach level 10, and you can put a skill point into your ult granting you a third Meepo. Now you'll have 3 meepos with level 3 Earthbind and that should increase your ability to gank by a crazy amount and you'll be able to start getting kills. By this time you should already also have your blink dagger, so ganking with this should be pretty easy. You don't need 1250 ranged net because you can get up and close with enemies with your blink dagger.

After level 10, I like to get Geostrike to level 3 as well. Only because I feel like I don't need a level 4 Earthbind just yet. Level 3 Earthbind is sufficient enough and anything further would be luxurious. Leveling Geostrike now adds a lot more to your farming, especially for 1v1 skirmishes. This adds more reasons why level 4 Earthbind isn't completely necessary. There will be times where you'll find a stray enemy by himself and if you can blink poof him and net him down, the Geostrike just seems more useful than a level 4 Earthbind. Sometimes you don't even need to lock them down with your nets. One tag of Geostrike is enough to slow your enemy down for the rest of your meepos to stack their Geostrikes on to him. And once that happens, he's as good as dead.

By level 15, you have the option to choose between maxing out Earthbind or Geostrike first. By this point you should already have your blink dagger and your Boots of Travel, and if you've been doing good you should already be working on your aghanims scepter actually. But in any case, your mobility should be so strong with Boots of travel and blink dagger that you should be able to farm so fast and gank anyone and everyone that seems to be alone or not playing carefully for basically free gold. Deciding where to put that level 15 point, I prefer to put into Earthbind over Geostrike just for the sake of having that maxed out range in your netting. It allows for more effective ganks and now that you have boots of travel and you're farming multiple lanes, these kinds of opportunities should appear more often.

At this stage of the game you're not really trying to join in on too many team fights. The gear you get adds a whole lot to your mobility but it doesn't generally add too much actual stats to your damage or your health so you're not the biggest threat in a team fight and you don't really add a whole lot to these team fights anyway in fact you may even be focused down a lot and die a lot. Try to split push towers while your team distracts the enemy team. If your team is pushing top, then push bottom and middle. If your team is pushing mid, then push Top and bottom and etc etc. If your team isn't really applying any kind of pressure and it's sort of dangerous to push any lane really, then just farm the jungle.

Okay, so you've been farming and split pushing lanes and you're almost finished with your Aghanims. You'll also notice that you're actually close to level 17 which is the time you get to max out your ult. I actually kind of find it amazing how smoothly that works out cause you'll get two extra meepos more or less at the same time. From this point on, I would normally keep the enemy at the edge of their seats by just constantly applying the pressure with split pushing. Not only does this push the enemy team back and they try to defend, but you're also gaining so much more experience than everyone else and you're leveling twice or three times as fast as everyone else. Once you get an actual solid piece of gear like a Heart of Tarrasque should you feel more confident in team fights. Work your way up to level 20, and the gear you have should allow to be an effective split pusher, a crazy farmer, as well as a ganker/team fighter.

Items

Alright! Itemssssss... So like I said previously, the items you'll be getting here should make you pretty vulnerable throughout the early to mid stages of the game. You're DEFINITELY squishy, and some of the times, if the enemy team is out to get ya and they're constantly ganking you or trying to apply pressure to you, I would probably change strategies or build orders. Now, I'm not toooo entirely worried if I get little to no farm in the early stages of the game, because eventually you WILL get a blink dagger. The only time I really ever get worried is if the enemies main focus is you. If that's the case I would definitely skip out on blink dagger and boots of travel right away and just get stat items like a power treads or a vlads.

Okay so you're gonna start off with a tango, stout shield, ring of protection and you'll have 50 gold left for an iron branch, so yeah, just get it for the sake of it. Stout shield is a great item for Meepo. It gives the chance to block damage as you try to get gold somehow here and there. The ring of protection is good for the extra armor, keeps you in lane a little longer. However, yeah it doesn't have much of a use for anything else but this and there really isn't much of a follow up into a new item so some people may find that buying this kind of makes your build inefficient to begin with but hey, like I said, if the situation calls for it and you're definitely unable to go with this build, you can always turn the ring of protection into a vlads or something so there ya go! The tango should provide a good amount of regen, try to avoid getting nuked and always play safe. The ideal case scenario is that you get harrassed by auto attacks, just enough for your tangos to keep you in the lane. By level 3 you should have enough to get your regular boots, even if you've had little to no farm.

So the next thing you should be saving up for is a blink dagger. At this moment in time you won't have any stat increasing items at all and in fact you won't for awhile, but a blink dagger is so useful for surprising people especially if someone else from your team is looking to gank someone. Use your blink dagger to surprise gank people and ONLY for small skirmishes. Don't use it if there's a big team fight when all you really have are like 2 meepos to get in the fray. If there are several team fights going on, I'd suggest to just keep farming your lane. You're pretty useless in any fight really until you have at least a third meepo.

With three meepos you should be able to farm a single lane and jungle at the same time, use this to farm quickly to your Boots of Travel. Avoid fights that involve more than two enemy heroes. 1 or 2 enemies should be okay to blink poof them with an ally around (just a golden rule).

Once you have boots of travel it's time to go insane. Boots of travel allows EACH of your Meepos to teleport to anywhere on that map that has an allied structure or allied creep! This is amazing because if you have three meepos, then you can teleport to three different locations at the same time OR you can save your teleports. You can teleport to farm top lane, and when you feel that it's unsafe or you've been in that lane for too long you can teleport to bottom lane! And if you have a hurt meepo you can teleport back to base and then poof the rest of your meepos back to base, heal up and teleport straight back to a lane and start farming again with fully healed meepos! This mobility is sooo much more effective than Natures Prophet or even Tinker!

You can use your boots of travel to defend Towers or come in to aid a team fight or you can use it to get away if you find yourself in a cornered position. In any case, these boots are your freedom to do anything on the map.

The next item you should be working on is your Aghanims Scepter and you should all know by now why you'd even get a Scepter. Working on this after boots of travel should line it up for level 17 so you'll more or less get an additional meepo right around the time you max out your ult which is always nice.

Once you've got the three key items down, (Blink Dagger, Boots of Travel, and an Aghanim's Scepter) any gear after that is totally situational. I like to get a Heart of Tarrasque if you've had a solid game so far. It adds so much stats and health to your Meepos and essentially the harder it is to kill you the better. Heart of Tarrasque also adds health to all your meepos which is nice and injured meepos that are close to death can always teleport back to base. Can't emphasize enough how effective it is to have that luxury because many times will hurt meepos that walk back to base will get hunted down by enemies.

Ethereal Blade is a great choice, but to me is entirely situational depending on the enemy team composition. I only ever really get this item against enemy teams that have harder hitters like Sven, Faceless Void, Phantom Assassin, Kunkka, or even Ursa. If you ever seem to get chased down by any of these types of heroes, then just go ahead and Ether Blast them making them impossible to attack you and then poof them. Or you can just Ether Blast them and TP away. Against faceless void I try to keep my main Meepo hidden, so if he surprises you with a chronosphere I'll just run around the chronosphere perimeter, ether blast him, lock him down with Earthbind, and decide if i want to carry on fighting him or if I want to retreat from him at this point. The Ethereal Blade agility increase is also amazing for your Meepos damage!

Assault Cuirass is an amazing item for Meepo. You get the armor aura as well as the attack speed. Especially if you don't have the micro to use items with actives then just go ahead and get the Heart and AC combo. You'll be so tanky and do so much damage. The attack speed in combination with Geostrike is so damn strong it's hilarious.

Mekanism is a decent choice but I only ever really get this if I'm kind of struggling to survive. It adds some decent heal aura as well as armor and it is also great during near to death situations. Sometimes I'll even get it if someone on my team already has it. The heal is just too good sometimes...

Scythe of Vise is a great choice for enemy carries that seem to be getting out of hand or key heroes such as Earth Shaker or Faceless Void or Phantom Assassin. Use the sheep stick to make enemy heroes essentially useless and try to take them down immediately. The Sheep Stick is a good item overall, however against Melee Carries I prefer the Ethereal Blade only because of the extra damage you do with your poofs as well as the extra agility damage you get as well.

Vladimirs Offering is a decent choice to get early on in the game. I only ever get this item if I need help farming jungle or just farming in general. The aura lifesteal is great as well as the extra damage. However overall, vlads is only a "decent" item to get.

Observer Wards...... Meepos greatest fallback is not being aware of ganks or enemy whereabouts. If your team isn't buying wards or placing them in locations that doesn't really prove useful to you, it's probably best to just get them yourself and place them in spots where you're trying to farm. You can't be slowed down in farming because of ganks. If you fall behind too early you're pretty much going to be going uphill for the remainder of the match. Place wards in the jungle, place wards in areas you think enemies will try to sneak up on you. The key to playing Meepo is just awareness of the map. It's how you're able to multitask effectively without dying all the time. And besides, meepo is such an effective farmer that buying wards is absolutely nothing to your wallet.

Ok so this is how it works..

The main role for you is to constantly push the towers, whether it is top lane, mid lane, or bottom lane. No matter the case, there has to be a vulnerable lane that you can threaten. You'll be moving around a lot. And I mean A LOT. Your enemies will move around a lot too. They will chase you down, they will defend, but depending on their choices, if they don't bring the appropriate enemy counter or the right amount of people to stop you, you will crush them with 5 meepos. This will cause them to change their strategy whether it's to send reinforcements to stop you but in doing so, will leave them vulnerable to the rest of your team to either win small skirmishes or to push other towers.

If by any chance the opponents have changed plans and find you to be too threatening cause you're taking down their towers then by all means fall back and let your allies apply the pressure again. Eventually the enemy team will have to rearrange their strategy once more and when that happens, your back to split pushing once again.

Boots of Travel allows you to change your tactics with a snap of a finger. It's so adaptable, granting you the ability to teleport anywhere at ANY TIME. The boots of travel and poof combo is just too strong.

Communicate with your team, make sure to deliver the idea that you'll be pushing towers where they aren't. And if your team can 4 man push a single lane effectively that should allow you to push the other two lanes. Just as effectively and it's up to the enemy team to decide how they want to handle this type of strategy and defend it. And if all else fails and their defense is just too good, you can always farm the jungle in a matter or minutes with multiple Meepos. I can also not even strain enough how much you should be abusing the ability to farm multiple locations at one time. Even if you are just jungling, having ONE meepo auto farm a lane helps out so much, EVEN IF you're not getting the last hits in the lane because you're focused on jungling or whatever, you're still getting the experience.

Now I don't think I've mentioned this quite yet about playing Meepo but you have got to have great map awareness ! I would say, when I'm multitasking or at multiple locations, my eyes are on the map like 70% of the time. If by any chance I see an enemy hero on the map, I'll retreat almost immediately. Reason why is because you've already done your part and you've done your damaged. You've caused someone to relocate and defend a lane so whatever time they wasted trying to get there or whatever TP they wasted or experience they lost trying to defend against you is their loss and your gain. Having Boots of Travel is your advantage because you aren't losing experience and your not wasting time traveling because you can instantly relocate somewhere else and you can instantly relocate BACK to where you came from in the following second. Even IF your teleport happens to cancel out, you can just select a different meepo and try again and then use your Poof to teleport the rest of them.

Anyway. This is the basic idea of my guide and I hope it makes sense to most of you ^^. I'll defintely try to provide some videos or replays when I get the chance.

Good luck to all and have fun! :)
