Mirana Pub Build

Mirana Pub Build

Hi all, I've only been playing DotA2 for a few months and I really like the guides on here and have found them really helpful, as well as Purge's 'Welcome to DotA, You Suck' guide. Mirana has become one of my favourite heroes due her diversity and adaptability in Pubs as carry or support, and anywhere in between. The stun is fantastic once you get the hang of it and there really is no better feeling than sending a Sacred Arrow out 10 metres in front of your enemy and watching them run straight into it for a 5 second stun! I play Mirana as offlane most of the time, but top or bottom lane is fine for her. I only play mid with her if nobody else in my team wants to!

Anyway, I have found that this build mostly kicks *** in Pubs, I have a 68% win rate with Mirana at the minute so perhaps it will start getting harder for me, but for now... please enjoy. Feel free to comment!

Item Build

My boots of preference for this build are Phase Boots, not only so Mirana can whiz around the map, but also whiz through creeps to escape, and help with last hitting in the early game. I buy Boots of Speed with my first 450g then the Blades of Attack asap after. Note that all the items for Phase Boots can be bought from the side shop, so nip in there if you get the chance.

After this I go straight for Ring of Basilius to combat mana problems in lane, just remember to switch off the aoe effect so the lane doesn't push. You can also buy the Sage's Mask from the side shop too, so rushing Ring of Basilius is also an option.

Remember to sell your old Iron Branches at the side shop too so you don't lose gold!

So the entirety of the build relies on a core Manta Style. I love Manta for 3 main reasons;
1. You get illusions of yourself to confuse the enemy and do extra 28% damage,
2. You get 10% movement speed increase (which with phase boots and after a leap makes Mirana super-speedy!)
3. Most importantly, you get a movement/silence purge on activation.

However, one thing to note is that your Manta Style illusions only scale from your core stats (Agi, Str and Int) and not straight damage stats/items. Therefore, with Manta Style as core, other items around this should have high stats (such as Agility) rather than pure damage stat.

I really like to go for the Eye of Skadi next as the stats are great and the slow is really effective in team fights especially since your illusions fire slowing arrows as well. I always buy the Ultimate Orbs first in this item to help with the illusions straight away. Plus, having 2 Ultimate Orbs on you when you visit a secret shop for the rest means you don't have to wait for the courier to build the item.

If the game has been in your favour so far, you should have enough gold to start building Butterfly, however I must admit I rarely finish this item before we win! I do always go for Eaglesong first (which I usually manage before the end), then Talisman of Evasion before finishing with the Quarterstaff. If gold is getting a bit tight (somebody stole all your last hits/kills) and you don't think you can finish Eye of Skadi, go straight for Eaglesong. Since agility is Mirana's main stat the +25 agility on her and the illusions is just as good as the +25 all stats in terms of damage. Although you miss out on extra health and mana, as well as the slow effect.

Situational Items?

If both your team and the enemy's are pushing T3 towers then it is a great idea to upgrade your boots to Boots of Travel to save a slot in your inventory (which would otherwise be filled with Town Portal Scrolls of course!

If the game isn't over yet and you still have bags of money (which has only been the case for me on rare occasions) I liked to get a Soul Booster.

Occasionally I like to grab a Drum of Endurance during the laning phase - that is if nobody else on the team grabs one. This is useful if you're getting harassed or playing with other heroes who would benefit from the aura.

The Role of Mantamirana

So as I mentioned I like to play this style of Mirana on an outer lane, usually offlane. Remember to not auto attack creeps, just play for last hits (which is quite hard until you finish Phase Boots since her base damage is not that high). Deny friendly creeps as and when you can, but never opt to deny over a last hit if 2 creeps are getting low at the same time. Whenever an enemy hero gets in range throw a quick right-click attack their way, but do not use your spells unless looking for a kill.

Once you have your Phase Boots and are level 3-4, go for a hero kill in your lane. The best time is when all the enemy creeps are dead and there is maybe 1 or 2 friendly creeps left. Usually in Pubs the enemy heroes stay trying to last hit. Ping the hero you are aiming for, fire your Sacred Arrow and walk in (at this stage of the game, always walk in and leap out). Make sure you are far enough away from your target so that it's a long stun if it hits. If your arrow connects do 1 or 2 right-click attacks, then Starstorm. If your laning partner was on the ball you should have a kill by now! Or you may need a few extra attacks. If you take too much damage, turn and Leap out of there!

Once you have your Manta the general theme for Mirana is to stay back in team fights, try to land a good Sacred Arrow, Leap into the fight, Starstorm then pop Manta Style (or Manta>starstorm, depending on situation, i.e. if silenced).

Mirara's ulti is really useful too, especially if there are no other invis heroes on your team (usually = no wards/gem/dust). Moonlight Shadow can be used to either initiate a fight ensuring that your team has better positioning and readiness than the enemy. Or to escape a failed team fight. Also be aware of the map and your team mates. If one of them is in trouble on the other side of the map it may be useful to activate Moonlight Shadow to help them escape - just be aware that at level 1 the fade time is slow, so its better to pop this too early than too late.

Sacred Arrow tips

First of all, I'm by no means an expert in firing Mirana's Sacred Arrows, but after practice it does become a lot easier, and by watching some pro games I have started trying a few 'tricks'.

It's always better to over estimate the distance ahead of the hero you send the Sacred Arrow. For example, if the enemy is running away from you at a 90 degree angle, fire your Sacred Arrow way way in front of them. So even if it misses by going in front of them, at least it stops the enemy in their tracks for a second, potentially allowing you and your team to catch up.

Positioning is also key, hiding behind trees and firing your Sacred Arrow through trees makes it much harder for the enemy to dodge as they cannot see the full flight path.

Also don't be afraid to use your Sacred Arrow occasionally for vision. If you suspect a gank off to your side, fire the arrow into the trees to see who's there. With practice you can guess where the enemy might be, and in Pubs, more often than not people stand and wait in the same places. Just think "where would I stand if I was waiting to gank"?!

However, the best thing I have found when firing sacred arrows is to always take a second look. If you are going to fire an arrow, stop, quickly recalibrate (i.e. double check the enemy is definitely still moving along the same path, make sure you're anticipating their movement - to fire it in front of them etc.) then fire. I found that sometimes I was firing my arrows too hastily and it often went where the enemy used to be... anticipating your enemies movements is the only way to ensure your Sacred Arrow hits. Plus, in Pubs, the enemies movements are often far easier to anticipate as most people run in straight lines >.<

Therefore, remember, when playing against a Mirana, never run in straight lines, and make sure you always stand behind your creep line!

Another way to ensure your Sacred Arrow will hit the mark is to communicate with your team mates and line it up with a more 'reliable' stun. First, make sure you're in a good position, far enough away for a long stun, then fire your Sacred Arrow at the same time as your team mates' stun. By the time their stun wears off, your arrow should be there to hit straight after!

Summary

As with any hero, good Mirana play relies on good team work, pinging an enemy before you fire Sacred Arrow, or casting Moonlight Shadow to help an ally escape a gank on the other side of the map really make a difference in Pubs. If you play Mirana well, you should make a real impact on the game. Good luck and have fun!
