Mid Level Spectre (~3k MMR) Pub Builds/Strats

Incandescence
November 23, 2014

Introduction

The Guide:

This guide is for Pubs where you're not going to be able to rely on team mates to support you properly and you're likely to have a hard time. This is why 2xTango and Vanguard.

I am ~3k MMR and I play Spectre a lot. I play a lot of solo-queue pub games and this build works well in that scenario. This is not a pro build and Spectre is not a suitable beginner hero.

This build assumes: decent last-hitting ability, decent map-awareness and the experience to deviate from the build if the opportunity arises. (e.g. I have free-farm let's skip Phase/Vanguard and get 15 minute Radiance)

The Hero:

Spectre is one of the strongest late game carries. To offset this she is weak early game. In fact she's probably the weakest character in the game at level 1.

Despite being such a hard carry she's surprisingly bad at 1v1 fights. She's much like Medusa in this aspect that she excels in team fights. Once most of the enemy team is dead your Spectre will have her team with her to kill the big bad carry that she maybe couldn't fight alone.

The main thing about spectre is versatility, you can put almost any carry-ish item on her and it'll work.

Strengths:

Tankiness (later on)
Chase
Tracking escapers
Split Farming (not split pushing)
Team Fights
Good vs Blink Dagger (Radiance + Haunt)

Weaknesses:

Squishy (early game)
The entire early game/Laning Phase
1v1 Duelist Carries (e.g. Anti-Mage, Faceless Void, Life Stealer)
Stun heavy lineups (BKB isn't v good on her)
Slow Heroes (Viper, OmniKnight, Venomancer)

Roles:

Hard Carry
Front-Line Tank
Team-Fight specialist

Ganker Assist (see strategy section)

Pros / Cons

CONS

- WEAK IN LANE: If you have a greedy/Defensive team spectre will drag you down in the early game and you will find it exceptionally hard to recover.

- FARMING: Spectre has a hard time farming early game and doesn't have a farming mechanic to rely on later on, such as Anti-Mage or Naga Siren.
Radiance is a farming item and it's very good on spectre but she is still not able to farm faster than any other radiance hero with it. All those shiny late-game items, you'll be able to get 1 of them in most games, and it'll most likely be Manta-Style.

PROS

+ STRONG LATE GAME: past a certain point, approximately 15k Gold: given equal farm to any hero in the game, Spectre will most likely be able to do more with it.

+ GLOBAL: Spectre can safely farm while her team goes looking for a fight, she doesn't need to choose one or the other. She simply has to Haunt and Reality when a fight starts. This is INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT! This is her Niche, When paired with an aggressive/Push lineup she can go do her thing in the jungle or under one of their towers and when her team starts a fight, she doesn't just show up, she creates havoc.

+ ADAPTABLE PLAY STYLE: If you're winning, send your team off and haunt in when a fight starts. But if you're losing, then play defensive. The enemy has to come to you. If they don't then you farm your side of the map and you're a super-hard carry so THAT IS FINE! If they DO come to you, make them work for it, try not to die.

+ ADAPTABLE ITEMISING: You can put almost any item on spectre and it will be good. Some items play to her strengths more than others. But if you want to fight a BKB hero? Skull Basher/Abyssal Blade/Skadi are NICE. Someone has evasion? MKB is NICE! Want team fight? Buff her illusions! Want a tank, make a tank! Want damage? Buy some DAMAGE!
It all works.

Game Phases

LANING PHASE:

Quelling Blade ASAP. Consider not buying the second tango set then buying Quelling Blade at side-shop and ferrying tangoes out if you need them.

Last Hitting is hard, her damage is low meaning any decent enemy can deny her if given the chance. This means she needs SUPPORT.

'But I'm in a pub game and I'm being Dual Laned' Yep, I feel ya bro. You will do badly in lane. Just make sure to NOT DIE, get your Phase/Vanguard up asap and call for help if any extra heroes turn up in your lane.

Is a lane free? GO THERE. if the 'safe lane' is not safe, then go somewhere else.

PHASE/VANGUARD:

You're now less afraid of fights. Your Haunt is your global presence tool. You can farm up until the exact moment a fight starts and then cross the map to get stuck in.

Go jungle. In the rare case that you are happily farming away by this point still, be wary of ganks because your enemy team is stupid if they don't try to shut you down, but go nuts. When they inevitably come for you, run away and go jungle.

The Vanguard is a fight/jungle item in my opinion, it means you can go anywhere to find farm and you can haunt into any fight that happens.

RADIANCE:

More of the same, get your money up. With even just the relic your farming time goes up quite nicely but the radiance is a whole new beast.

Control which creep you're hitting so you maximize radiance damage. By this I mean if there are 3 Ogres, hit each one twice and by then the radiance will have killed them all off. If there are Big+Little creeps, kill the big ones.

In Lane, hit the Melee creeps so their health is uneven, then last hit as you can't rely on radiance burn to get the last hits.

RADIANCE -> CRIMSON GUARD -> +1

You're now in fighting shape, though your focus is still on farming you can start looking for fights. From this point on Farming is OPTIONAL

YOUR FARMING IS NEVER DONE!

If you're not happy with this, don't play spectre. You can 7 slot spectre and then save for buyback, then you could replace radiance. If you ever get to this stage then yes, your farming is done... But you will basically never get to this stage so keep farming, or just finish the game. But in doing so you're farming the enemy team's buildings so it still counts ^_^

Items

Town Portal Scroll: If you have mana to dagger for safety, you should have a TP scroll. You're not antimage, you don't get a second blink in a few seconds, you get a traceable path with a little leeway and if you don't TP out you're still dead.

Magic Stick: You have NO MANA POOL and your spells cost INFINITY MANA! This will go a long way to remedying the problem. DO NOT SKIP THIS. You will see your team in a fight and be unable to haunt, let alone Dagger because you Haunted two minutes ago and still have no mana left. (Unless you have a CM, I F'Kin love CM Aura)

Phase Boots: You can go Power Treads and that's not bad but the Damage increase and the move speed increase for chasing heroes is big. More likely you should get Phase Boots and then upgrade to Bots of Travel when you're super farmed.

Vanguard: This is the item that makes Spectre this patch, I feel. It's a **** item beyond 20 minutes into the game. But it's pretty easy to build, it's cheap HP and Tankiness and it builds into Crimson Guard, which is such a good item OMFG.

On top of that if you're having a bad game you do not particularly want to be visible to the enemy, you want to be out of lane and the Vanguard makes you tanky enough to jungle pretty well. If you get it early you might still lose hp in the hard camps depending on what spawns but you have a Scroll of Town Portal with you, just wait until your team is about 20 seconds from a fight, tp home and then haunt into the fight.

Radiance: This is not always necessary but it's one of the reasons you're likely to pick Spectre. If they have Blink Dagger initiation heroes then ( Radiance + Haunt) will prevent any blinking within ~0.5 seconds of casting it. It is also the best way to farm a Spectre as Hand of Midas doesn't give you the same team fight presence and Battle Fury doesn't synergize particularly well either.

If you get Hand of Midas or if you're shut down too hard to get a decently timed Radiance then skip it. I used to go Eye of Skadi rush 100% of my games about a year ago and that worked phenomenally but it's almost as hard to farm up as Radiance. I relied on old Tranquil Boots for that which doesn't work anymore T_T

Crimson Guard: Note: Active doesn't last long. Crimson Guard is great vs physical damage lineups but if you're against a magic heavy lineup then you can skip it, or just leave it until physical damage becomes a thing later on.

There's a second, hidden benefit to Crimson Guard. All of your illusions AND your allies, AND any other allied units, all get a MASSIVE RED ORB around them. It is nigh impossible to follow a team fight once Spectre uses ( Haunt+ Reality) and then uses Crimson Guard.

Or hold on to it, Haunt+ Reality into the fight but often enemies will back up at that point, then pop the active once they turn around.

Manta Style: This is an excellent all-round item for Spectre because Desolate (PURE DAMAGE) is given to all illusions. So if you Spectral Dagger a lone hero, surround with Manta Style illusions... they're dead. SO DEAD. Manta Style gives damage, armour, some hp, some mana, RUN SPEED, everything Spectre wants. It is so good. If not picked up first, it's a second pick item for sure.

Diffusal Blade: This is recommended build item and it does good things. The intel is nice, the Purge slow is BOSS. and the Mana Burn goes to all illusions and stacks with Desolate as extra illusion damage.

Diffusal Blade is your go to illusion damage item. Great as a pick-up after Manta Style though if you're up against anyone like Medusa where Mana Burn is excellent you could get it before, or if you're up against anything that requires some purging then as Spectre is a natural Diffusal Blade carrier anyway why not get it early.

Eye of Skadi: This item is awesome. I prefer it to Heart of Tarrasque as a tank item. If I've gone Radiance -> Crimson Guard -> Manta Style I get this next almost always. The HP it gives is less and the sustain is less but it gives Armour and it gives Damage and it solves all your mana woes. Stats also increase the damage of your Illusions.

Satanic: Excellent tank item, due to Spectre's chase ability and especially with Eye of Skadi for the extra slow you can pick a target and chew on their HP mid-battle and just ignore all the damage coming at you. This is NOT good vs a lot of stuns and it's extra good if your team has the stuns.

Alternatively you can use it as a super- Heart of Tarrasque out-of-battle heal by just going to the jungle, Satanic on some creeps and seconds later you're good to go.

Heart of Tarrasque: Despite my glorifying and preferences for other Tank items this is an Excellent item on Spectre. With Dispersion her HP becomes an attack, with Heart of Tarrasque you often get around 3000 hp, 22% of that is 660. Dispersion damage decreases with range but you're going to be able to give out ~300 PURE damage to anyone near you if you get killed. That's a lot if you consider it as just extra on top of the rest of the damage Haunt, Radiance and your team will do.

I only ever get Heart of Tarrasque if I'm going to get Blade Mail because I prefer the more rounded items that give less HP but offer more in other areas, but that's a personal preference, HoT is a great item to get after Radiance in almost any siuation.

Blade Mail: Offensively healthy, I like to get Heart of Tarrasque before this but you can just go Blade Mail and it's strong as is. If you consider that 22% of the damage (max Dispersion) is reflected, then all the damage you DO take is reflected with Blade Mail then anyone attacking you under the effect of Blade Mail is taking MORE of their own damage than YOU ARE.

Black King Bar can negate Blade Mail but if you go Radiance, Heart of Tarrasque, Blade Mail then most Black King Bar carriers unless they get it super late, will be down to 6-7 seconds so you can probably just focus someone else in a fight until the Black King Bar is down, then you can go on them and if they DARE fight back Blade Mail and make them regret it!

Skull Basher: This is a great item, with Spectre's innate chase you only really need one bash to make an escape fail. But realistically speaking it's 3k gold which you could spend better elsewhere. But if you're worried about one hero in particular. I'm thinking Anti-Mage, Lifestealer or Faceless Void but any hero who is carrying well enough to kill you 1v1. Skull Basher is the way to go.

Abyssal Blade: This is the ultimate 1v1 hero item. Once you get this you become a SERIOUS THREAT to ANYTHING. Again this is an item you won't need most of the time but vs an escape hero, Black King Bar hero or super-hard carry.

Abyssal Blade goes well with Blade Mail. Save Abyssal Blade's active for when Black King Bar is popped, then Blade Mail once Black King Bar wears off. Can't lose the 1v1 fight tbh.

Monkey King Bar: This is purely for vs Evasion heroes and honestly you should think twice even then. Often it's better to just kill off the rest of the enemy team and focus these types of heroes in which case other items will suit you better than that as the rest of the team doesn't have evade.

BUT if you're against someone and they're the only real threat and they have Evade, I'm thinking Phantom Assassin as a good example here if she gets good farm. ( Blur50% evade wtf?!) Slot this item in as third item after Radiance. You'll need something to tank you up so Manta Style/ Eye of Skadi/ Heart of Tarrasque but then get the Monkey King Bar and you're ready to duel.

Butterfly: This is an awesome item. Your illusions get some extra damage, your Tankiness goes up vs Attacks but newly the Active gives you extra move speed!

Spectral Dagger(Lv4) + Phase Boots + Manta Style + Butterfly active = 510 Move speed
Spectral Dagger(Lv4) + Phase Boots + Manta Style = 496 Move Speed
Spectral Dagger(Lv4) + Phase Boots = 407 Move Speed

Boots of Travel: This is a great 4th or 5th slot item, the run speed is nice and it gives you the option to Haunt into battle and then buyback and still get back into battle using Boots of Travel. This continues the theme of ALWAYS FARMING. Because that's the reality, you need mo' money!

Refresher Orb: I love this item but it's a 7th slot item frankly. This gives you the option to Haunt into a battle, then Haunt again. If you're so farmed you can afford a refresher and still have buyback then that's pretty sweet, do it. You can just leave it in your stash or have it with you to give to a courier or something. Haunt, Refresher Orb, Reality. Die then Haunt back in.

It might sound crazy but it's a great strategy, you're just unlikely to get many chances to use it. Haunt is a great team fight tool, you want to use it to start the fight! BUT if you have buyback it's risky to use it before dying as then you can't Haunt back in. You could solve this with Boots of Travel and that's your first choice but if you're that ridiculously farmed then HEY GET REFRESHER!

Hand of Midas: Honourable mention... you're not really going to be buying this. But if you do only do it when you have mad free-farm early game. Then either go Manta Style/ Eye of Skadi rush or if you get Hand of Midas + Radiance (wtf?) just buy really expensive items after that as you'll have no inventory space pretty quickly.

Black King Bar: Honourable mention... You're not really going to be buying this. but if you are up against some SERIOUS team fight and it's wrecking your day, or you're anticipating it wrecking your day. ( Tidehunter + Sand King + Dark Seer + Lina + Ogre Magi) Then yes get Black King Bar but frankly why'd you pick Spectre into that? Pick a natural Black King Bar Carrier...

Battle Fury: Honourable mention... This is no better for farming than Radiance but it doesn't buff your illusions particularly. The Mana regen doesn't do much as it's based on your current regen and that is poor for most of the game anyway. The HP regen is okay but you could just get a Vanguard...

But I guess if you're against a tanky lineup with no Blink Daggers then Radiance isn't going to be much use and Battle Fury will give you... Nothin, I don't know why not Radiance.

Illusions don't get Cleave, though they get the Cleave animation (like the life steal green animation, they don't get it but they mimic to make the illusion believable)

Urn of Shadows Honourable mention... This IS A GOOD ITEM ON SPECTRE... But Vanguard is better now that there is Crimson Guard. Urn is a great item for participating heavily in fights but that's unreliable as a strategy, if it goes wrong you don't have a fallback so for that reason I don't recommend it unless you know what you're doing.

Drum of Endurance Honourable mention... similar to Urn Drums is an excellent Spectre item. Moreso than urn in my opinion but it's a mid-game item that falls off and as the no.1 slot you're going to end up selling it, waste of money... Crimson Guard is better : /

Drums is a good 'i'm not doing well' stop-gap for Manta and Skadi Builds however. It offers stats which includes MORE MANA which you need. The run speed is nice too, but if you go radiance you should get Vanguard.

THREE UNIQUE ATTACK MODIFIERS

SKADI STACKS WITH LIFE STEAL: So you can get a Satanic for extra tankiness and in-battle sustain (where a Heart of Tarrasque is out-of-battle sustain).

Eye of Skadi CAN STACK WITH Diffusal Blade: I don't mean Spectre can use both however Illusions do not get SKADI UAM whereas they DO get Diffusal UAM. Therefore, if you DROP DIFFUSAL AND PICK IT UP, you will be using the SKADI on Spectre but all of her illusions will get Diffusal.

THEREFORE: Eye of Skadi & Diffusal Blade & Satanic LIFE STEAL: If you have all 3, (you don't need Vladmir's Offering but you CAN get that too). Just drop the Diffusal Blade and pick it up. Now your Spectre has SKADI and Life Steal on her attack. But her illusions all have Diffusal on their attacks.

Skills

SPECTRAL DAGGER:

This is your main skill but use it scarcely! You might be frustrated at your low damage in the jungle or want to path over trees to farm faster. DON'T. You need to ALWAYS have ~300 mana for Haunt + Dagger.

Leveling Spectral Dagger means CHASE, not DAMAGE.

Run speed increases:
Spectral Dagger(Lv4) + Phase Boots + Manta Style + Butterfly active = 510 Move speed
Spectral Dagger(Lv4) + Phase Boots + Manta Style = 496 MS
Spectral Dagger (Lv4) + Phase Boots = 407 MS

Not to mention the slow applied to the enemy character. This is why Spectre is a chase character and if you leave yourself without mana to use it in a fight what use are you?!

DESOLATE:

This is your DAMAGE skill and it is glorious. MAX THIS FIRST IF YOU CAN! 65 pure damage early on top of your basic damage is a LOT. This is how you fight. Once you get Haunt you can do a LOT of damage in a skirmish with this baby.

DISPERSION:

This is your Tank skill. This applies to damage taken, so any modifications are applied first. This means Raw HP is better with Dispersion than Armour or Damage Block as those reduce what you disperse. Frankly though that's a side benefit in my opinion. The main thing is Lv4 Dispersion =22% all damage block. almost 1/4 of all damage is blocked. that is HAX. Unlike say Phantom Assassin's Evade or Pudge's Flesh Heap, this blocks Physical, Magical AND Pure damage.

I recommend skilling this LAST because Spectre's tankiness early game is low, her STR Gain is high but she starts squishy.
(In Mathematical terms: (not much)x1.22=(still not much))

HOWEVER 1 Value point in Dispersion is GLORIOUS. rarely is it worth maxing Desolate + Dagger before putting even 1 point in dispersion.

HAUNT:

This is why you get Spectre in my opinion. This is a combined Team Fight/Mobility/Farming tool. Yes farming. Because unlike every other hero Spectre can go off to afk farm while the team might be getting into fights, but the team doesn't suffer because she can turn up and sew chaos!

Early-Game: Haunt into any skirmish to get some assist gold or even kill gold. The XP is also nice because Spectre thrives on XP more than you might think. Every single level helps her tankiness a lot. (compare to Antimage who just needs money for BF, levels meh)

Mid-Game: Now you're either split farming or jungling. Let your team push or team fight or whatever, just keep alt+click on haunt so they know if you're available for a fight or not. I do not recommend pushing lanes past river, your escape is meh... you will die.

Late-Game: Time to start considering BoTs to buy-back into fights OR save Haunt until you die, then Buy-Back and Haunt in.

Vs some strong single-target line-ups it can be beneficial to run-in, die, then the real fight happens as your enemies will have expended all their ultimates to take care of you, the enemy hard-carry. But then you haunt in, the real team-fight starts and they haven't got their abilities. Much like Wraith King, run in first and dare them to kill you. (though if they just kill you without using many abilities that was a total waste, don't do it.)

Consider Refresher orb!
-Leave it in stash for buy-back, quick refresh, then put it back in stash and use Haunt
-Have it on courier (buy yourself a new one?) following you around jungle, then when a fight happens Haunt, Refresh, then replace it and Reality in!

Strategies

  • LANING: You are a helpless baby, get dagger first and hold it for either that golden first-blood opportunity OR more likely, hold it to escape through some trees when the enemy team go for you. And they will go for you. KEEP TP FOR ESCAPE.

  • I HAVE HAUNT!: Now is the time to start looking for global pick-offs. This is why Spectre is so much more viable in 6.82b than previous, the XP change in fights is UP and the Gold is still nice. But it means you can benefit from AFK farming AND from the Roaming.

  • THE HAUNT GANKS FAILED: Now you hold Haunt for big team-fights. Play defensively and keep your head down. But with it you can win fights against teams who might kill you otherwise or turn fights that were going to go badly for you otherwise.

  • FARMING: The laning phase is over, everyone's rotating like mad but you still need money. If you've got Phase + Vanguard consider just going to the jungle to stay off the Radar otherwise just go to any lane that's your side of the river and farm there quietly. Either way you're basically only going to Haunt across the river unless you know exactly where the enemy team are. You need to farm and not die.

  • WE'RE LOSING BADLY: In the new patch it's MUCH easier to pull back a game. In your particular game you have Spectre so you probably have a decent late-game chance. You just need to get there. Now you have to test your patience to the limit! You need to be super cautious and your team needs to let you get the farm that trickles in here and there. If they don't or if your patience runs out, you're dead.

Your strategy here is to out-last the enemy. They will get impatient to end the game because you have Spectre and you need to capitalize on their mistake. If they genuinely don't make one then well... Good Game, Well Played. But when they do, you need to have been patient and you need to be ready.

  • GANK ASSIST: There's plenty of decent roaming heroes who struggle to solo-kill early-game without help or a gold/xp advantage. This includes ALL invis heroes, blink dagger heroes, etc. You can be their enabler, farm and keep an eye on them or listen for their ping. then R like a boss, reality in and then Dagger the fleeing prey. Good job, now run away before anyone finds out what you did.

  • GLOBAL WTF: Spectre + Natures Prophet + Zeus + anyone else... Just rude. Maybe an Ancient Apparition to start it off, when he hits an ult on someone anywhere then everyone else hits R like a lemon and the enemy team cries 'whyyy?'

  • WE'RE WINNING!: Keep farming... If you've just won a fight then yeah go push some stuff duh... but if the enemy team has any chance of doing anything mean to you, just go farm and wait for a fight to happen, then Haunt into that.

  • I'M 6 SLOTTED!: Keep farming, you need buyback and if you have that you could get a refresher.

  • I CAN'T BE BOTHERED WITH THAT: Then go win...

  • SKADI RUSH: This is my go-to 'not radiance' build. Good with Midas. Spectre is good with Stats, Skadi is the best stats item. Spectre is a great Chase Hero. Skadi is an excellent chase item. I generally go Manta after Skadi to continue the chase theme, but you can go Basher to have the entire set of anti-bkb.

  • MANTA RUSH: This is so legit but it's a pick-off strategy. Good with a scout hero like bounty hunter or Treant Protector. Manta illusions get Desolate so an early Manta can DESTROY a lone hero in seconds, but you can't find lone heroes reliably without help. It is NOT worth randomly using Haunt to hope you find a lone hero to pick-off.

  • DIFFUSAL FIRST: Honourable mention... not recommended... Maybe good vs Omni-Knight or Warlock or as a fighting build, the Diffusal slow IS strong but let's be real, is it strong enough to warrant buying it first? not in my opinion.

HEROES (Enemy or Allied)

WEAK VS:

WARNING DO NOT GET SPECTRE VS THESE 4 WITHOUT STRONG TEAM!!!
  • Lifestealer: his slow is too strong and Feast WRECKS SPECTRE
  • Undying: Radiance doesn't work on his zombies and the slow is TOO STRONG aunt also helps his heal
  • Necrophos: Necro ultimate is SO STRONG, it basically means if you lose half your HP you're dead, and dead for an extra 30 seconds.
  • Omniknight: Not as severe, but his ult trumps your ult completely and his Degen aura makes killing you early a piece of cake.
  • Agro-Trilane

As the weakest Laning hero in the game, if you're put vs an even half-way decent Agro-Trilane you're doomed.
  • Strong Duo-Lane

This means almost any other duo-lane. With exception: Spectre + Strong Laner vs Double Melee duo-lane
  • Aggressive Supports in general e.g.:

Skywrath Mage, Lina, Vengeful Spirit, Chen(ganks), Enchantress(ganks), Visage, Treant Protector, Witch Doctor, etc.
This doesn't mean once you see these heroes you don't pick spectre. But it DOES mean if your draft can't compensate then you DO NOT PICK SPECTRE.

STRONG VS:

STRONG WITH:

Summary / TL;DR

You generally want to Trilane or 2v1 Lane. If you 2v2 lane or 3v3 then you're going to have a bad time.

Ways to ensure this:

-Do they have a Jungler? GO
-Do they have an Off-Laner? GO
-Both? Now we're talking!
-Do they have an Obvious Trilane? GO
-Do they have an obvious or even possible Agro-Trilane? ABORT
-Do they have plenty of strong Laners but your team is greeeeeeedy? ABORT

Early game is good:

You're probably going to win. Don't throw the game by being complacent, keep up the farm and vigilance against ganks. Make sure your team doesn't throw a team fight by going when Haunt is down.

Early game is bad:

This is 90% of my games and it's fine. This is why Phase/Vanguard. Look out for Haunt Pick-offs and keep your head down. Once you can jungle do it and thus your head is even lower. They don't need to know you exist until you turn up to smack them about.

I Dunno what I'm Doing?!:

Keep 300 mana while you jungle for Haunt + Dagger. Use the minimap to move your hero around the jungle and watch for global happenings. Don't let yourself get picked off 'cause you weren't watching your hero.

TL;DR

WTF Why are you here then?!
